Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State freshman Melissa Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Colerain) joined a distinctive class Friday as she became the second Buckeye to earn All-America honors in the 10-year history of the Ohio State women’s soccer program.
Miller, who earned Great Lakes All-Regional honors earlier in the week from the NSCAA, joins former Buckeye Jodie Stranges (1994-1996) as the only two Ohio State women’s soccer players to earn All-America honors. Miller is one of two freshmen on the 2003 NSCAA All-America squads and is the first Buckeye to earn such accolades in her first season at the collegiate level.
Miller, who earned All-Big Ten honors, combined with co-captain Erica Nollen (West Chester, Ohio/ Lakota East) to spearhead the Ohio State backline in the 2003 season. Miller helped to lead a record-setting Buckeye defensive unit as OSU established an all-time team mark in goals against average and number of goals allowed in one season. Miller, who also contributed on the offensive end with six points on two goals and a pair of assists in 2003, led a defense that allowed just 17 goals in 21 matches, which calculated to a 0.77 goals against average this season. The two marks shattered the previous Ohio State all-time record of 24 goals allowed in the 1996 and 1998 seasons and bested the 0.86 GAA mark set in 1998.
