Senior wrestler Tommy Rowlands won the HWT title at the 2003Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, marking his third tournamenttitle in as many events this season. Men’s basketball sophomoreJ.J. Sullinger recorded his first career double-double with 22points and 11 rebounds in OSU’s 62-57 win over Virginia Tech lastSaturday in Nationwide Arena. He scored Ohio State’s first 12points in the win.

Indiana, Santa Clara, St. John’s and Maryland will participatein the 2003 NCAA Men’s College Cup Friday and Sunday at CrewStadium. Maryland scored four goals in 11 minutes in a 4-2 victoryover St. Louis, while St. John’s came back from a two-goal deficitfor a 3-2 win over Creighton to earn a date in the first nationalsemifinal game Friday at 5 p.m. Indiana upset No. 1 UCLA 2-1 toearn its 16th trip to the College Cup, while Santa Clara beatMichigan 3-1 to earn a date in the second national semifinal gameFriday at 7:30 p.m. Winners of the two games will meet at 2 p.m.Sunday in the national championship game. For the women’s squad,Stephanie Raezer (Sr., Newark, Del./Glasgow) improved her seasonbest time by 32 seconds and made the NCAA B qualifying mark in the1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:50.32. Dominating thefreestyle events, Nicole Maglich (So., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) settwo season best times and one lifetime best time, along withjoining the 400- and 800-yard medley relay team. Kylie Lancken’s(Jr. Pymble, Australia/Ravenswood) long-course meter results in the50- and 100-meter freestyle and 100- and 200-meter backstroke areAustralian Olympic trial cut times, allowing Lancken to return toAustralia later this year to try to qualify in those events for theAustralian national team. For the men’s squad, Rob Kauscher (Jr.,Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and Marty Tomes (So., Cincinnati,Ohio/Anderson) set four season best times each, half of which werein long-course meters. The Buckeyes will hold winter training inFlorida and return to action Jan. 3 with a coed dual-meet againstOhio at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The No. 13 women’sbasketball team (4-0; 0-0 Big Ten) takes to the road to face BigXII opponent Nebraska (5-1; 0-0 Big XII) Friday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m.EST. The game will be broadcast on 820 AM-WOSU. This is the secondtime in program history that Ohio State and Nebraska have met onthe hardwood. The Buckeyes took the first game, 63-54, in a BuckeyeClassic contest over 13 years ago on Dec. 2, 1990. The 2003National Champion synchronized swimming team opens competitionSunday, Dec. 14 at Florida University in Coral Springs, Fla. Headcoach Linda Lichter-Witter’s squad returns 18 swimmers from lastyear’s roster, including three All-Americans in Lindsay Newbill,Heather Burdick and Carly Grimshaw. Following a sixth-place teamfinish at the 2003 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, including aHWT tournament title by Tommy Rowlands, the wrestling team opensthe dual season as one of four teams at the Clarion Duals. TheBuckeyes will join Drexel, Lock Haven and the host Clarion GoldenEagles in the all-day event Sunday, Dec. 14.
Rowlands was one of five Buckeyes to earning placing honors at the Las Vegas Invite as he claimed his third tournament title in as many events this season. Senior Blake Kaplan earned the runner-up spot at 184 pounds, while fellow seniors Jeff Ratliff – sixth at 141 – and John Clark – seventh at 165 – also landed spots on the podium. Freshman J.D. Bergman took eighth at 197 pounds.
The women’s and men’s gymnastics teams commenced their 2004seasons with a mixed pairs meet Saturday, Dec. 6 in St. John Arena.Nine teams, consisting of one player from the women’s squad and onecompetitor from the men’s squad, battled each other for the mixedpairs crown. In three rounds of competition, Liz Meaney (Jr.,Ashtabula, Ohio) and Randy Monahan (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) earneda total score of 55.775 to claim the championship.
The women continue their pre-season competitions with an intrasquad meet at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Steelwood Training facility. The team begins the regular season against Kentucky at 4 p.m., Jan. 4 in St. John Arena.
Hosting the Scarlet and Gray Intrasquad at 2 p.m., Dec. 19 in St. John Arena and the Varsity Exhibition at 2 p.m., Jan. 3 in the Steelwood Training Facility, the men’s squad will kick-off its regular season competition at the Windy City Invitational at 7 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
The women’s ice hockey team looks to continue its six-gamewinning streak as they travel to face non-conference opponentNortheastern at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Matthews Arenain Boston, Mass. Ohio State is 7-5-0 overall and 5-5-0 in the WCHAthis season. The Buckeyes are setting records this season as theyset a program record of three consecutive series sweeps and theirsix-game winning streak ties the previous record of six consecutivewins set in the 2000-01 season. Following the Northeastern series,the squad will go on a three-week hiatus for the holiday season.Then, the Buckeyes return to action vs. St. Cloud State Jan. 3-4 inColumbus. The squad, 11-7 on the year and tied forsecond place in the CCHA with an 8-5 ledger, now has a three weekbreak from competition and will return to action Dec. 27-28 at theEverblades College Classic in Estero, Fla.
Buckeye senior forward Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) was the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s player of the month, making him an honorable mention selection for College Sports Television (CSTV)/Hockey Commissioners’ Association (HCA) National Division I Player of the Month honors. During November, Caponigri led the Buckeyes with 12 points, on six goals and six assists, in eight games. Highlights of his month included recording his first career hat trick (and the Buckeyes’ first in 129 games) at Northern Michigan Nov. 8 and hitting the 100-point mark for his career with an assist against Alaska Fairbanks Nov. 1. He scored the gamewinning goal both at Northern Michigan Nov. 8 and at Colgate Nov. 21 and also had the primary assist on Dave Steckel’s gamewinner with 53 seconds remaining at Cornell.
