Greater Augusta Sports Council Announces Three Finalists for 2003 Ray Guy – Ohio State Buckeyes

Augusta, GA – The Greater Augusta Sports Council announced today the three finalists for the fourth annual Ray Guy Award recognizing the nation’s top collegiate punter. They are Dustin Colquitt (University of Tennessee), Kyle Larson (University of Nebraska) and B.J. Sander (Ohio State University).
Each of the ten semi-finalists was evaluated on his overall statistics and contribution to his team with emphasis placed on the following categories: net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20, average return yardage and percentage of punts not returned. A national selection committee of college coaches, sports information directors and sports writers decided the three finalists.
Colquitt, a junior from Knoxville, Tennessee leads the Southeastern Conference and is fourth in the nation with a 45.9-yard average. Larson, a senior from Funk, Nebraska has had just 40 percent of his punts returned and ranks seventh in the nation with a 43.6-yard average. Sander, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio is known for his field position. He has landed 48 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line, and just 36 percent have been returned.
Previous Ray Guy Award winners are Kevin Stemke, University of Wisconsin (2000), Travis Dorsch, Purdue University (2001) and Mark Mariscal, University of Colorado (2002).
The winner of the 2003 Ray Guy Award will be announced on the ESPN College Football Awards Show, on Thursday, December 11, 2003. The winner will again be honored at the Greater Augusta Sports Awards Gala in Augusta, Georgia on February 5, 2004. Also honored at the Gala will be the 2003 G.A.M.E.S. (Greater Augusta Medals for Excellence in Sports) Award winners.
