Athletes of the Week
Field hockey senior forward Vanessa Immordino (Sr., Roseland,N.J.) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and thewomensfieldhockey.com Division I National Player of the Week forthe week ending Oct. 26. Immordino led Ohio State to three winslast week, including two over Big Ten foes Indiana and No. 5Michigan, which helped the Buckeyes climb into a tie for firstplace in the Big Ten standings with one game to play. The seniorforward opened her week by equaling her career-best with sixpoints, including two goals and two assists, against Miami (Ohio).She capped off her week with the game-winning goal on a penaltyshot against nationally-ranked Michigan, handing the Wolverinestheir first conference loss this season and boosting the Buckeyesto the top of the league standings. Football tailback Lydell Rosswas named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week following Saturday’s35-6 win over Indiana. Ross rushed for a career-high 167 yards andthree touchdowns on 23 carries against the Hoosiers. Ross scored onruns of 11, 2 and 1 yards in helping the Buckeyes jump out to a35-0 lead. In addition to recording the third 100-yard game of hiscareer, Ross also caught three passes for 33 yards.
Athletics Good Stuff
The women’s soccer team (11-3-3, 4-3-3) stepped out of Big Tenplay Monday, with a trip to Loyola-Chicago and Loyola Soccer Park,where the Buckeyes recorded their eighth shutout in 17 matches thisseason as Ohio State blanked the Ramblers by a 4-0 count. With thewin, the Buckeyes improved to 7-0 in non-conference action. Sixplayers recorded points as junior Liz Mumley led the way with agoal and an assist, while freshman goalkeeper Staci Sinkway grabbeda career-high 10 saves in the Buckeyes’ next to last regular seasonmatch.
Ohio State concludes regular season action as the travel to Bowling Green at 2:30 p.m. Friday before heading the Big Ten tournament play Thursday, Nov. 6 with an opening round match against Michigan set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff (CST).
The men’s golf team will compete in its fourth and finaltournament of the fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 1 as it travels toWilmington, N.C., to compete in the Landfall Classic. After afirst-place finish at the 2003 Mercedes-Benz Championships inKnoxville, Tenn., the women’s golf team returns to action Nov. 2-4to compete in the Hooters Collegiate Match Play in Myrtle Beach,S.C. The three-day event will mark the final tournament for theBuckeyes this fall. The men’s and women’s cross country teamsreturn to action Sunday as they travel to East Lansing, Mich., tocompete in the 2003 Big Ten Championships. Last season the menposted their highest finish at the Big Ten championships since 1977as they placed second. The No. 7-ranked men’s 2003 resume includesTop 10 finishes at the 2003 Great American Cross Country Festivaland the 2003 Pre-National Championships. The women enter the eventin search of their third first-place finish of the season and firstBig Ten title under head coach Chad Myers. The field hockey teamwalked away with three victories last week after defeating Miami,8-0, Indiana, 2-1 in double overtime and No. 5 Michigan, 2-1. TheBuckeyes improved their home record to 7-1 this season, which istheir best home record since 1998 when they also went 7-1 at home.After creating a three-way tie in the Big Ten standings byupsetting No. 5 Michigan, the Buckeyes battle Michigan State forthe Big Ten regular-season championship title at 5 p.m. Friday inEast Lansing, Mich. Senior Vanessa Immordino earned Big TenOffensive Player of the Week and Saskia Mueller received defensiveplayer of the week for their performances. Immordino posted sixpoints against Miami and scored the game-winning goal on a penaltyshot against the Wolverines. Mueller led the defensive unit as itheld the three teams to two goals combined. Mueller also recorded adefensive save and a goal in the victory over Michigan. The men’ssoccer team posted a 1-0-1 record last weekend as the Buckeyesnotched a 1-0 win Friday at Pittsburgh and played to a 1-1 tieSunday with Northwestern. Junior Sammy Tamporello scored OhioState’s goal Friday at Pitt, while freshman Taylor Korpieskiknocked in the goal Sunday against the Wildcats. Ohio State is2-2-1 in the Big Ten and will host Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Saturdayon Senior Night as the Buckeyes play their final home and Big Tenmatch of the season. The men’s tennis team is competing at theMidwest Regional Championships Oct. 23-28 in East Lansing, Mich.Jeremy Wurtzman (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.), the No. 1 seed of theevent, advanced to the semifinal round after picking up four wins.He defeated the No. 8 seed, Ryler DeHeart of Illinois, 6-4, 2-6,6-3, in the quarterfinal round. Wurtzman, ranked No. 20 in thenation (Sept. 3 preseason polls), will play Illinois’ Pramod Dabirin semifinal action, Tuesday. Also advancing to the quarterfinalround in singles was Buckeye Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschaat,Belgium). Mertens fell to the No. 12 seed Chris Martin of Illinois,6-4, 6-4, in quarterfinal play. The Ohio State duo of Scott Green(So., North Canton, Ohio) and Ross Wilson (So., Toledo, Ohio), theNo. 9 seed, also advanced to quarterfinal action and will playWestern Michigan’s Brady Crosby and Ravi Pathanjali. The men’shockey team fell to non-conference foe Mercyhurst, 3-2, Friday.This weekend the team returns to conference play, as it hostsAlaska Fairbanks for a two-game series. The Buckeyes and Nanookswill face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena.The fencing team will play host to the OSU Duals Saturday at FrenchField House in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State will compete againsteight squads in seven rounds at the all-day event. Other schoolscompeting are: Bowling Green, Case Western Reserve, Chicago,Cleveland State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue and WayneState. Key returnees for the 2003-04 Buckeyes are, Adam Crompton(So., Newark, N.J.), the 2003 national men’s sabre champion, JasonRogers (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.), a men’s sabre bronze medalist atthe 2003 Pan American Games, Hanna Thompson (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.),Metta Thompson (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.), Alexandra Shklar (Sr.,Jerusalem, Israel) and Louise Bond-Williams (Jr., Gloucestershire,England). At the conclusion of the 2003 season, the Ohio Statefencing squad finished fourth overall in the NCAA. Outfielder SteveCaravati (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Dover), shortstop Brett Garrard (Sr.,Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), catcher Derek Kinnear (Sr., Kenton,Ohio/Kenton) and left-handed pitcher Josh Newman (Sr.,Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) have been voted by their teammatesas baseball team captains for the 2004 season. Ohio State opens theseason Feb. 13-15 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic inHouston, Texas against Texas, Kansas State and Texas Tech. Thewomen’s tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Midwest RegionalChampionships in Kalamazoo, Mich., over the weekend. Erica Fisk andJackie Leskovar both reached the round of 32 in singles. Leskovar’swin came over No. 66-ranked Michelle Dacosta of Michigan. TheBuckeye doubles duo of Fisk and Leskovar won two matches to advanceto the round of 16 before falling to the No. 3 seed from Illinois.The rowing team swept varsity eight and pair competition onSaturday at the Speakmon Head Race. The three eight boats allfinished under 17 minutes taking the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions. OSUalso entered five pair boats into the competition, which took theTop 5 spots out of 11 boats. Ohio State’s final fall competitionwill be the Rivanna Romp Nov. 16 in Charlottesville, Va. Regularseason action begins March 27 against Princeton and Brown inPrinceton, N.J. The women’s ice hockey team fell one goal short toNo. 5 Minnesota-Duluth in both games of the series over theweekend. OSU took the lead in the contest Friday but fell to UMD,4-3. After being down 2-0 Saturday, the Buckeyes attempted a comeback in the third period, but fell 2-1. Sophomore Jana Harrigan ledthe squad with two goals and nine shots over the weekend. Harriganguiding the Buckeyes with three points this season. Ohio Statetravels to Madison, Wis., to face No. 6 Wisconsin at 3:05 p.m.Saturday and Sunday at the Kohl Center. Women’s volleyball (8-10overall, 2-8 Big Ten) will host 7 p.m. home matches this weekend.OSU will face Illinois, Friday, Oct. 31 and Northwestern, Saturday,Nov. 1 in St. John Arena. Ohio State lost at Penn State (0-3) andat Wisconsin (1-3) last weekend. Stacey Gordon ranks secondnationally in kills per game with a 6.33 average. She has haddouble-figure kills in her last 66 matches.
