Women’s Ice Hockey Suffers 2-1 Defeat By No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-4-0 overall, 0-4-0 WCHA) suffered a 2-1 defeat to the No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (4-2-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The game marked the final game of the two game series in Columbus, Ohio. The teams will play a second series Feb. 6-7 in Duluth, Minn.
Minnesota-Duluth came out strong in the first period as Jessica Koizumi scored a goal at 7:06, assisted by Allison Lehrke and Noemie Marin. The Buckeyes had four power-play opportunities, but they could not get the puck past UMD’s goalie Riitta Schaeublin. At the end of the stanza, Ohio State led 15-10 in shots.
The Buckeye goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) saved 17 of the Bulldogs 18 shots in the second period. UMD’s Nora Tallus scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Caroline Ouellette at 17:48. Ohio State was again unable to get a point on the scoreboard during the stanza.
Ohio State attempted a comeback in the third period as they tallied 11 shots to Minnesota-Duluth’s four. OSU junior forward Jeni Creary (Jr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) recorded a power-play goal at 12:10 to cut the Bulldogs led by one. Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) and Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) assisted on the team’s first power-play goal of the season. UMD’s Tricia Guest received a penalty for checking at 17:08, forcing a Buckeye power play. OSU pulled its goalie at 17:11 on a last minute attempt to tie the game. The Buckeyes were unsuccessful as they dropped a second heartbreaker to UMD. OSU goalie Glaser tallied 30 saves and allowed two goals in 59:11 of action. UMD goalie Riitta Schaeublin recorded 33 saves, allowing one goals.
The Buckeyes outshot the Bulldogs 34-32. Ohio State held Minnesota-Duluth scoreless on six power-play opportunities. The Buckeyes were 1-10 on the power play.
