Women’s Ice Hockey Drops 4-3 Decision to No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth in Home Opener – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-3-0 overall, 0-3-0 WCHA) lost to the No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (3-2-0, 3-2-0 WCHA), 4-3, in its home opener Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes and Bulldogs face again in game two of the series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the OSU Ice Rink.
Ohio State dominated the first period, recording 10 shots to UMD’s five and posting one goal while holding the Bulldogs scoreless. Sophomore Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) scored the first goal of the game on a rebounded shot from Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) at 10:04. The points marked Harrigan’s second goal and Farrell’s second assist of the season.
Minnesota-Duluth attempted a comeback in the second period, as Larissa Luther scored a goal assisted by Jenny Potter, 1:22 into the stanza. Ohio State regained the lead as co-captain Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) passed the puck off to Harrigan for her second goal of the game at 4:19. UMD fired back with two more goals, but OSU’s Jennifer Desson (So., Niagara Falls, Ontario) had the final word in the second period. Desson and junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) went 2-on-1 against UMD’s goaltender as Desson came away with the goal at 19:25.
Ohio State held Minnesota-Duluth scoreless until 13:30 in the third period, as Potter tallied a goal of her own assisted by Caroline Ouellette and Krista McArthur. The Buckeyes battled to take the lead and pulled their goalie with 37 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs received a penalty for holding at 19:37 forcing an OSU power-play. Then, each team followed with a timeout to strategize the final seconds in the game. Ohio State was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as it dropped the heartbreaker to UMD. OSU goalkeeper Melissa Glaser(Jr., Rockford, Ill.) tallied 22 saves and allowed four goals in 59:23 of action. Riitta Schaeublin and Anna-Kaisa Piiroinen split time in the goal for UMD. Schaeublin recorded 13 saves, allowing two goals and Piiroinen posted five saves, allowing one goal.
The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 26-21. The OSU was 0-3 on the power play and UMD was 1-3 on the power play.
