COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s golf team captured its first tournament title of the season as the Buckeyes posted a final-round of 296 to edge out Oklahoma State by one stroke at the 2003 Mercedes-Benz Championships. The women finished the event with a three-round total of 884. The event was being held at the par 72, 6,201-yard Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Buckeyes victory in Knoxville marked the first tournament victory since the 2003 Big Ten Championships.
“It was a good field and we knew we were going to have to play well to win,” Ohio State Head Coach Therese Hession said. “I think we did a good job. There were some things, that if you asked my players, they think they could have done better. A win is a win and I am never going to complain about a win, especially with the field that they had here this week.”
Senior Allison Hanna (Portland, Ore./David Douglas) tied for first after three-rounds and defeated Courtney Mahon from Arkansas in a playoff to earn medalist honors as she made her second playoff appearance during the fall season. Hanna’s first playoff of the fall came during the Lady Northern Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. Hanna finished the tournament with a three-round total of 217.
“I have been in so many playoffs over the summer and in my last tournament,” Hanna said. “I am starting to get a little more comfortable and this time I tried to go out and see what I could do. I wanted to make a birdie instead of just count on a par.”
Teammate Lindsay Knowlton (Jr., Toronto, Ont./Havergal College) also posted a strong performance for the Buckeyes as she posted a three-round total of 220 tying for seventh.
The Buckeyes return to action Nov. 2-4 as they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to compete in the Hooters Collegiate Match Play.
