Women’s Ice Hockey Loses to No. 1 Minnesota in Game Two of the Series – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-2 overall, 0-2 WCHA) lost to No. 1 Minnesota (2-0, 2-0 WCHA), 7-0, Saturday evening in front of 1,258 fans at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
The game got off to slow start, as there were only a total of three shots on goal until Minnesota’s Krissy Wendell scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 14:37. Ohio State came back with several shots but was unable to score. The Golden Gophers tallied two additional goals in the first period by Kelly Stephens at 16:01 and Becky Wacker at 19:14. At the end of the period, Minnesota led 3-0 on the scoreboard, but Ohio State led seven to six in shots.
The Buckeyes could not get the puck past Minnesota’s goalkeeper Jody Horak in the second period. OSU tallied nine shots compared to Minnesota’s 15. Gopher Natalie Darwitz posted an unassisted goal at 11:46. Minnesota’s La Toya Clarke recorded a goal of her own at 14:53 assisted by Lyndsay Wall and Kelly Stephens.
The third period began with a Buckeye power play. OSU came out strong but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Minnesota held the Buckeyes scoreless and added two goals to earn the shutout.
OSU goalkeeper Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) tallied 25 saves and allowed seven goals in the full 60 minutes of action. Minnesota goalie Horak saved 23 shots and recorded her first shutout of the season.
The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 32-23. The OSU penalty-killing unit held Minnesota to one-of-three power-play chances, while the Buckeyes were unable to convert.
Ohio State returns for its season home opener as the Buckeyes face defending national champion No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
