Women’s Ice Hockey Falls in Season Opener to No. 1 Minnesota, 6-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-1 overall, 0-1 WCHA) fell to the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0, 1-0 WCHA), 6-3, Saturday evening at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The game marked the first regular season and WCHA opener for both teams.
Ohio State will face Minnesota at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in the second game of the two-game series at Ridder Arena. The game will be broadcast on www.gophersports.com.
The Buckeyes posted the first goal of the game at 14:32. OSU captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) recorded her first goal of the season on a pass from freshman Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario). The Buckeyes almost held Minnesota scoreless in the first period, but with 20 seconds to go Minnesota’s Krissy Wendell scored on a pass from Lyndsay Wall. Ohio State held Minnesota’s offensive attack to eight shots, while the Buckeyes tallied three in the first period.
Minnesota came out strong in the second period. The Gophers took the lead as Wendell scored a power-play goal at 7:13. Minnesota’s Kelsey Bills came back with a shot, which slid to the right of OSU’s goaltender at 7:46. Wendell scored her third goal of the game during an OSU power-play at 9:09. The Buckeyes would not let the Gophers stop them as Jennifer Desson (Jr., Niagara Falls, Ontario) picked up a loose puck in the Buckeye offensive zone to score her first goal of the season unassisted at 13:13. The Buckeyes tallied 10 shots on goal to the Gophers nine during the period. At the end of the stanza, Minnesota led 4-2 on the scoreboard.
Ohio State sophomore Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) opened up the third period with a goal of her own to cut Minnesota’s lead to one. The goal was assisted by Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) at 4:59. The Gophers soon followed with a goal by La Toya Clarke at 5:24. With 12:16 remaining in the game, Minnesota’s Wendell posted her fourth goal of the game to give the Gophers the win. The Buckeyes were unable to come back. OSU goalkeeper Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) recorded 22 saves and allowed six goals in the full 60 minutes of action. Minnesota goalie Jody Horak saved 16 shots and allowed three goals.
The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 28-19. The OSU penalty-killing unit held Minnesota to one-of-five power-play chances, while the Buckeyes were unable to convert.
