COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-0 overall, 0-0 WCHA) downed the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-0, 0-0 OUA), 5-1, in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The win and stats will not count in OSU’s overall season statistics.
Ohio State begins the regular season and WCHA action against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
The first period began with a Buckeye goal at 3:17. Junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) scored on a pass from freshman Krysta Skarda (Fr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) and senior Jeanne Chapple (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.). The Varsity Blues retaliated back with a goal of their own as Carla Pagniello scored a power-play goal at 6 minutes assisted by Andrea Patry. OSU outshot UT 9-4 in the first period.
OSU held Toronto scoreless in the second stanza, while the Buckeyes tallied three goals of their own. Sophomore Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) and senior captain Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) set-up Mulvaney for her second goal of the game at 4:54. Mulvaney recorded her third goal on a power-play, which was assisted by Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) and Jaclyn Haines (Jr., Rossland, British Columbia) at 8:21. Mulvaney’s goal marked her second consecutive hat trick, the first came Friday against Toronto in game one of the series. Senior Melissa Pirie (Sr., Islington, Ontartio) tallied the third goal of the period. The Buckeyes outshot the Varsity Blues 20-6 in the period. The Buckeyes put forth another fine performance in the third period, holding Toronto scoreless and tallying their fifth goal. Chapple scored an unassisted goal at 6:52 to secure OSU’s win.
OSU freshman goalkeeper Erika Vanderveer (Fr., Bradford, Ontario) recorded 11 saves and allowed one goal. Lisa Robertson and Kara Fillier split in the net for Toronto. Robertson started the game, playing 31:47, and posting 20 saves while allowing three goals. Fillier saved 16 shots and allowed two goal in the last 28:13 of action.
Ohio State outshot Toronto 41-12. The OSU penalty-killing unit held UT to one of four power-play chances, while the Buckeyes converted on one of five.
