The 17-10 victory by the Badgers tonight snaps Ohio State’s19-game win streak, ending the nation’s longest streak. Overall,Ohio State had won six straight road games. The Buckeyes lastsuffered a loss on the road Oct. 27, 2001, dropping a 29-27decision at Penn State. The streak does not include Ohio State’s20-16 win in a neutral setting vs. Cincinnati Sept. 21, 2002. Withthe loss tonight, Ohio State suffers its first defeat in 11 Big Tencontests and its first conference loss on the road in a span of sixgames. The last Big Ten contest Ohio State dropped was a 34-22 lossto Illinois at Ohio Stadium Nov. 17, 2001. The 17-10 loss snapsOhio State’s 10-game winning streak when the game is decided byseven points or less. Four of Ohio State’s six games this seasonhave been decided by seven points or less. The two previousmeetings between the schools were decided by an average of fourpoints – 19-14 Ohio State win in 2002 at Madison and a 20-17Wisconsin victory at Ohio Stadium in 2001. Today’s 17-10 decisionis the third straight meeting to be decided by seven points orless. Ohio State is now 50-16-5 in the all-time series withWisconsin. Following the loss, Ohio State dropped its first game inMadison since a 20-16 defeat in the 1992 season, snapping afive-game unbeaten streak in Camp Randall Stadium, which includes a14-14 tie in 1993. Wisconsin’s win tonight marks the first time infive meetings between the Buckeyes and Badgers that the visitingteam did not win the game. Ohio State has been ranked in 44 of the71 meetings between the two schools. Ohio State now has posted a31-10-3 record in meetings with the Badgers when the Buckeyes areranked in the Top 25. The Buckeyes have visited Madison as a rankedsquad on 22 occasions and now hold a 13-7-2 ledger.
Ohio State and Wisconsin have met on 12 occasions when both squads are ranked. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 7-3-2 in those contests. The last time Ohio State and Wisconsin met when both were ranked in the Top 25 was Oct. 7, 2000. The Buckeyes topped Wisconsin 23-7 at Camp Randall Stadium.
The Badgers now sport a 3-11-2 mark as a ranked team vs. the Buckeyes, with all three wins coming in Madison.
Overall, when OSU is ranked in the AP Top 10, the squad is now269-64-9. Ohio State’s mark when ranked in the AP falls to368-117-14. Prior to tonight’s loss, Ohio State had won its lastthree Big Ten road openers, with the last lost coming at No. 2 PennState Oct. 16. 1999 by a 23-10 score. The streak includes a 23-7victory at Wisconsin in 2000 to open Ohio State’s conference roadschedule. Wisconsin’s 7-3 halftime advantage marked the first timeOhio State has trailed at intermission this season. The halftimedeficit is the first for the Buckeyes since trailing Michigan by a9-7 count last season. Ohio State’s three-point output in the firsthalf tonight is its lowest since posting three points in a 3-3halftime stalemate at Purdue last season (Nov. 9). The 10 points byOhio State in tonight’s game marks its lowest point total sincetopping Purdue 10-6 last season (Nov. 9). Ohio State seniorquarterback Craig Krenzel’s fourth quarter touchdown pass extendedOhio State’s streak to 83 games scoring at least one touchdown. Thelast time an Ohio State team was held without a touchdown was a13-9 loss to Michigan in the 1996 season. Wisconsin running backBooker Stanley rushed for 125 Yards on 31 carries to become thefirst player to rush for 100 yards against the Buckeyes since histeammate Anthony Davis gained 144 yards on 25 attempts in the 2002meeting between the Buckeyes and Badgers. Stanley and Davis are theonly players to rush for 100-yards against the OSU defense in theBuckeyes’ last 23 games. The 79-yard touchdown catch by Wisconsinwide receiver Lee Evans is the longest scoring play against theBuckeyes since an 87-yard interception return by Akron Sept. 8,2001. Overall, Wisconsin averaged 422.3 yards per game on offenseand 30.5 points per game heading into the contest, while theBuckeyes held opponents to 273.0 yards and 15.4 points over thefirst five games. Tonight, the Badgers posted 299 total yards,including 141 yards rushing. Ohio State converted on both red zoneopportunities in the game – a 24-yard field goal by place kickerMike Nugent in the second quarter and Krenzel’s touchdown strike inthe fourth quarter. On the season, Ohio State has converted on 20of 21 visits into the opponent’s red zone, posting 13 touchdownsand seven field goals. The 46-yard catch by Ohio State senior widereceiver Drew Carter to help set up the tying touchdown in thefourth quarter is the longest reception of his career. Carter’sprevious long was a 28-yard catch. For the game, Carter postedthree receptions for 90 yards, which also served as a career best.Carter’s previous career high was 76 yards on four grabs againstSan Jose State last season. With his first catch in tonight’s gameOhio State split end Michael Jenkins – four receptions, 48yards -has caught at least one pass in 32 consecutive games. Wisconsinwide receiver Lee Evans also notched his 32nd straight game with atleast one catch with his 79-yard touchdown grab in the fourthquarter. Ohio State tight end Ben Hartsock’s 18-yard catch in thesecond quarter served as his longest this season. Hartsock finishedthe game with five grabs for 41 yards. Ohio State juniorplacekicker Mike Nugent connected on a 24-yard field goal attemptin the second quarter. The field goal serves as the 40th of hiscareer and moves Nugent into sole possession of fourth place inOhio State’s all-time field goals made category. Ohio State seniorpunter B.J. Sander boomed a 64-yard punt in the third quarter. Itis the second longest this season for Sander, who booted a68-yarder in the game against San Diego State (Sept. 6). Sander’scareer long is 69 yards. Ohio State senior linebacker RobertReynolds posted a career-best 12 tackles in the game. His previoushigh was an 11-tacke effort in the season opener vs. Washington.Ohio State senior defensive end Will Smith recorded two sacks inthe game, which matches his career high set last season vs. TexasTech (Aug. 26, 2002). Ohio State senior linebacker Jason Bondrecorded his second career fumble recovery in the second quarterfollowing a mishandled punt return attempt by Wisconsin. Bond’sfirst fumble recovery came in the 2001 season opener vs. Akron.Ohio State cornerback Dustin Fox intercepted a Jim Sorgi passattempt in the third quarter. The interception is the second on theseason and sixth of his career. His first interception this seasoncame against Bowling Green. Ohio State junior wide receiver BamChildress lined up in the slot on the Buckeyes’ first offensivepossession, marking his first career start. Senior Craig Krenzelstarted at quarterback after a two-game absence from the Buckeyestarting lineup because of injury. Senior Alex Stepanovich, who hasstarted the first two games of the season at center for Ohio State,entered the game in OSU’s second offensive series at right guard,logging his first action since the San Diego State game (Sept. 6).Since Ohio State first fielded a team in 1890, the squad is751-293-53 overall.
