Women’s Volleyball Falls In Five Games At Northwestern – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-6 overall, 1-4 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad battled into the fifth game, but fell short, dropping a 3-2 (30-24, 19-30, 30-27, 33-35, 15-12) decision at Northwestern (11-6, 2-3). The two hour and twenty-five minute match saw OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) recorded a match-high 33 kills for the Buckeyes with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) adding 11 and Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) 10. Wildcat Erika Lange had a team-high 20 kills with Jill Buschur adding 17, Iwona Lodzik 16 and Christie Gardner 12.
In game one, Ohio State trailed, 9-8, before eight consecutive Northwestern points opened up a 17-8 Wildcat lead. The Buckeyes closed to within five (29-24), but an OSU error ended the game at 30-24. Northwestern hit .205 for the game to .025 for Ohio State.
Game two saw Ohio State take an early 9-6 lead with back-to-back blocks by Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) and Grant and a solo by Whalen. The Buckeyes took the lead to 21-11 with a combination of blocks and NU hitting errors. Leading, 25-19, a Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.)-Gordon block, a Grant kill and two Northwestern errors made it 29-19. Gordon closed out the game with a kill for a 30-19 OSU win. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the game to .023 for the Wildcats.
Tied at seven in game three, a five point Northwestern run put the Wildcats ahead, 12-7. Trailing, 26-22, kills by Whalen and Gordon and a Wildcat error closed the margin to 26-25. Two Buckeye errors gave NU a 28-25 lead. OSU’s Gordon and NU’s Buschur recorded alternate kills to give the Wildcats a 30-27 win for a 2-1 lead in the match. Northwestern hit .209 for the game to .175 for Ohio State. Game four saw 16 ties and eight lead changes. Ohio State reached game point at 29-26 with a Miller-Schardt block. An OSU service error, a Drew Robertson-Lange block and a Lange kill tied the game at 29. A Gardner kill made it 30-29, NU, with the Wildcats playing match point. A Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) tied the game at 30. A Lange kill made it 31-30, Wildcats. OSU’s Grant tied the game at 31. Another Lange kill gave NU a 32-31 lead but Gordon countered with a kill to tie the game at 32 stopping the Wildcats third match point. Ohio State took a 33-32 lead with a Whalen-McCarthy block. An OSU error tied the game at 33. A Gordon kill made it 34-33, Ohio State and with a Wildcat error, the Buckeyes won the game, 35-33, to tie the match at two games each. Ohio State hit .225 for the game to .196 for the Wildcats.
Ohio State opened game five with two Gordon kills. The Buckeyes went up three points at 6-3 with a Schardt kill. Two kills by Lodzik and one from Buschur for the Wildcats tied the game at six. Tied at eight, three Northwestern kills gave the Wildcats an 11-8 lead. Trailing 12-9, back-to-back kills from OSU’s Gordon cut the Northwestern lead to one at 12-11. Lange made it 13-11 with a kill. OSU responded with a Grant kill at 13-12. A Lodzik kill made it 14-12 setting game/match point for Northwestern. A solo block by Leah Delcourt gave the Wildcats a 15-12 game five win and the match, 3-2. Northwestern hit .545 for the game to .400 for Ohio State.
For the match, Ohio State outhit Northwestern, .206 to .202. Each team recorded 73 kills while Ohio State had a four to one advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up 14 service errors to 11 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had a 71-61 margin in digs. OSU’s Gordon and NU’s Robertson shared match-high honors with 18 digs each. The Buckeyes had a 16-13 advantage in team blocks. Schardt (8 assists) for Ohio State and Lange (4 solos, 4 assists) for Northwestern shared match-high honors. Wildcat setter Robertson had a match-high 58 assists with OSU’s McCarthy collecting 48.
Ohio State now travels to Champaign, Ill. to play a 8 p.m. EDT match Saturday against Illinois (12-3, 3-2), a 3-1 (27-30, 30-19, 30-20, 30-26) winner Friday night against Penn State (15-2, 4-1).
BUCKEYE NOTES
Stacey Gordon’s 33 kills against Northwestern was her season best. She had twice recorded 32 against Cleveland State and Rice.
Stacey Gordon’s 33 kills extends her current streak of double-figure kill matches to 61. It was her 41st match with 20 or more kills and her eighth with 30 or more.
Stacey Gordon now has 1,563 career kills and needs 240 kills to become OSU’s career leader. She would pass Holly O’Leary (1987-90) who has 1,803.
Stacey Gordon’s ace serve against the Wildcats moves her into a tie for 18th on the OSU career list with 101. She tied Katie Virtue (1999-02) and Margie Meyers (1984-87). She needs two aces to pass No. 17 Jen Flynn (1996-99) who has 102.
Stacey Gordon’s 18 digs gives her 920 career kills. She moved to 15th passing Margie Meyers (1984-87) with 909 and Lisa Bettio (1982-85) with 911. She needs 21 digs to pass No. 14 Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) with 940.
Briana McCarthy had 48 assists against Northwestern and now has 538 career asissts and ranks 11th on the OSU career list. McCarthy passed teammate Heather Whalen who has 510 assists. McCarthy needs 68 assists to pass No. 10 Erin Hosie (1985-86) who has 605.
Amanda Miller with four assist blocks against Northwestern set a new career-high in assist and tied her total blocks best. Her previous best in assist blocks was three at Northwestern in 2002. Her four total blocks equaled her career-high set last season at Northwestern with one solo and three assists.
Jackie Schardt replaced D’wan Shackleford who left the match in game two. Schardt had a season-high seven digs and produced a career-high eight assists blocks. Her previous career high was five asissts at Michigan State in 2002.
