CANTON, N,Y. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (6-12-2, 4-6-2 WCHA) fell to No. 5 St. Lawrence (9-4-2, 4-2-0 ECAC), 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence started the game off with a goal at 10:36 by Amanda Sargeant. Ohio State’s Meaghan Mulvaney (So., Sylvania, Ohio/Honeybaked) received a penalty for interference at 11:16, starting the Saints first power-play opportunity. The Buckeye penalty-killing unit held the Saints scoreless. OSU’s first power play came at 19:32 when St. Lawrence’s Tracy Muzerall received a penalty for holding the stick. Ohio State took advantage of the opportunity, Jeni Creary (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) scored a power play goal at 19:45 assisted by Jana Harrigan (Fr., Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and Jennifer Desson (So., Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres). At the end of the first period, Ohio State and St. Lawrence were tied at 1-all and the Buckeyes led the Saints 10-5 in shots.
The beginning of the second period was a battle of the defenses. Ohio State’s Harrigan obtained the puck after a faceoff, passed it to Emma Laaksonen (Jr., Espoo, Finland/Team Finland/Blues Espoo) who took a shot from the blue line and Shana Frost (Sr., Frankford, Ontario/Beatrice North York Aeros) tipped it in for the Buckeyes’s second goal at 8:28. OSU’s second power play chance occurred at 16:01. Ohio State’s Emily Hudak (Sr., Marblehead, Mass/Cushing) followed with a penalty for hooking at 16:40. Neither team scored on the power play. St. Lawrence’s Sargeant scored at 18:42 tying the game. The second stanza ended at 2-all on the scoreboard and 7-all in shots. In the third period, Ohio State’s Melissa Pirie (Jr., Islington, Ontario/Beatrice North York Aeros) and St. Lawrence’s Laurie Ross received a set of penalties at 7:11 for high sticking. The Saints took the lead at 10:17, when Rebecca Russell scored. OSU’s Heather Farrell (Jr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret/Connecticut Polar Bears) received a penalty for holding at 15:17. The Buckeye penalty-killing unit held the Saints scoreless again. OSU head coach Jackie Barto called a timeout at 18:22 to regroup her squad. The Buckeyes pulled their goalkeeper at 18:22 in an attempt to tie the game. OSU setup for a goal with 10 seconds left in the game. Erin O’Grady (Jr., London, Ontario/Culver Academy) took a close shot on goal, which rebounded off St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper and Frost took a shot off the rebound, which was saved. Immediately following, five penalties were given at 19:56. St. Lawrence’s Trisha Powers recorded two minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. Ohio State’s Lindsey Steblen (Sr., Clayton, N.Y./Lake Placid Rockets) received two two-minutes penalties for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct.
The Buckeyes outshot the Saints 23-18. Ohio State held St. Lawrence scoreless on all four of its power-play opportunities. OSU was 1-for-two on the power play.
Ohio State’s goalkeeper Natalie Lamme (Fr., Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) saved 15 shots in 58:22 minutes of play. St. Lawrence’s Rachel Barrie recorded 21 saves in 60:00 minutes.
The Buckeyes have a week off before they travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on the St. Cloud State Huskies. The teams face off Jan. 18 and 19 at 2:05 p.m. in the National Hockey Center.
