Fiesta Bowl Chairman Steve Horrell officially extended an invitation to Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel to play in the 2003 National Championship Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, immediately following the Buckeyes victory over Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 23, to cap a 13-0 season.
Tressel responded with a two-word answer, “We accept.”
Sunday morning following the victory, The Columbus Dispatch sports headline read: Home free for Tempe.
The second-ranked Buckeyes capped a regular-season stretch run with a 14-9 win over the Michigan Wolverines, in front of the largest crowd in stadium history – 105,539.
The traditional grudge match between the two teams held true to form, as each tick of the clock watched as fans, players and coaches from Ohio State anxiously awaited the games end.
The Buckeyes will play in their first national championship since 1968.
