Women’s Ice Hockey Falls To No. 9 Mercyhurst, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (7-14-2, 5-7-2 WCHA) fell to the Mercyhurst Lakers (20-5-1, 3-0-0 CHA), 2-1, Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high 397 crowd at OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The meeting marked the first time the teams have met.
The first shot of the game was a goal by Mercyhurst’s Sara McDonald at 2:57. Ohio State’s first power-play opportunity came at 7:23 when Mercyhurst’s Lyndsay Barch recorded a penalty for interference. The Buckeyes were unable to score on the power play. OSU’s Heather Farrell (Jr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret/Connecticut Polar Bears) put the Buckeyes on the board at 18:38. The goal was assisted by Emily Hudak (Sr., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing) and Erin O’Grady (Jr., London, Ontario/Culver Academy). The shots were tied with four at the end of the period.
Ohio State came out strong in the second period. The Lakers took the lead at 7:59 when Samantha Shirley scored. OSU’s Emily Hudak (Sr., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) obtained a penalty for elbowing at 16:37. The Buckeyes’ second power-play chance came at 19:07, but again the special teams were unable to produce. At the end of the period, Mercyhurst led the scoreboard, but Ohio State led 7-4 in shots.
The third period was a battle of the defenses. Neither team was able to score. OSU’s had a power-play opportunity at 16:33, but again it was unable to capitalize on the chance. Ohio State’s Hudak recorded another penalty for tripping at 17:46. In a last attempt to tied the game, the Buckeyes pulled their goalkeeper with 14 seconds remaining. Mercyhurst led Ohio State 9-4 in shots.
Ohio State was outshot 17-15 by Mercyhurst, for the first time in 12 games. Ohio State held Mercyhurst scoreless on all two of its power-play opportunities. The Buckeyes were zero-for-three on the power play.
Ohio State’s goalkeeper April Stojak (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) saved 15 shots in 59:46 minutes of play. Mercyhurst’s Tiffany Ribble recorded 14 saves in 60:00 minutes.
The Buckeyes travel to Findlay, Ohio, where they will battle Findlay for the Ohio Cup at 2 p.m. Sunday.
