ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (7-12-2, 5-6-2 WCHA) shuts out St. Cloud State (6-15-0, 3-12-0 WCHA), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The Buckeyes recorded their third shutout of the season.
Early in the first period, St. Cloud State’s Katie Hauge received a penalty for hooking at 1:21 starting Ohio State’s first power-play opportunity. The Buckeyes were unable to score. OSU’s second power-play chance occurred at 13:02, but the Buckeyes were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. OSU’s Heather Farrell (Jr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret/Connecticut Polar Bears) took a shot down low, which was almost a goal but it hit the pipe. Ohio State’s Jeanne Chapple (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) scored the Buckeyes’ first goal of the game at 19:53, assisted by Shana Frost (Sr., Frankford, Ontario/Beatrice North York Aeros). The shots were even at 7-all at the end of the period.
The Buckeyes started the second period off with the momentum they gained in the first stanza. Ohio State held St. Cloud State scoreless but was unable to get anything in the net. OSU had a power-play opportunity at 17:15 when Carrie Holldorf received a penalty for holding. A pair of penalties was given to Ohio State’s Farrell for diving and St. Cloud State’s Leanne Perrin for holding. Neither team scored in the period, shots were OSU eight and SCSU six.
The third period was a battle of the defenses. The Buckeyes had several shots on target but could not get the puck past SCSU’s goalkeeper. Ohio State’s Jaclyn Haines (So., Rossland, British Columbia/Team Pacific/Team British Columbia) received a penalty for roughing at 6:21. At the end of the period, Ohio State led the Huskies eight to six in shots. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 23-19. Ohio State held St. Cloud State scoreless on all four of its power-play opportunities. OSU was zero-for-three on the power play.
Ohio State’s goalkeeper April Stojak (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) saved 19 shots and recorded her first shutout of the season in 60:00 minutes of play. St. Cloud State’s Laura Gieselman recorded 22 saves in 60:00 minutes.
The Buckeyes battle the St. Cloud State Huskies Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for game two of the two game series in the National Hockey Center.
