Vince Ng, a senior on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, claimedthe Milwaukee Tennis Classic title Saturday in Milwaukee, Wis. Ngdefeated five opponents in the men’s open singles tournament (64players). Ng claimed the Milwaukee Tennis Classic title after avictory over the No. 2 seed Rajeev Ram of Illinois, 7-6, 6-3. Hehas an 18-2 tournament record in the 2002-03 season. Ng has won11-consecutive matches since his Big Ten Indoors title inmid-November. Sophomore gymnast Randy Monahan led the Buckeyes to afirst-place finish at the Windy City Invitational. He placed firstin the all-around, beating the runner-up by more than a point, andfinished in the Top 10 in every event.

Senior Buckeye Derrick Butler was named 2002 Division I OhioCross Country Runner of the Year. Coach Robert Gary was named 2002Division I Ohio Cross Country Coach of the Year. The men’sbasketball team downed No. 15 Indiana Saturday at Value City Arena.The Buckeyes, 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten, now play host toMichigan Wednesday (8 p.m.) and Wisconsin Saturday (8 p.m.). SeniorBrent Darby scored his 1,000th point for the Buckeyes early againstthe Hoosiers. He finished with a game-high 28 points and is nowranked No. 38 all time in scoring at OSU. Junior Shun Jenkinsscored a career-high 22 points in the win over IU. The 7th-rankedwrestling team (3-1, 0-0) knocked off 6th-ranked West Virginia(1-1, 0-0) 21-14 on Thursday night in the WVU Coliseum inMorgantown, W.Va. The match featured ranked battles in each of the165, HWT, and 141 classes and three overtime matches as theBuckeyes clinched the victory with a Josh Daugherty (Sr., HuberHeights, Ohio) six-point victory via pin fall in the dual finale at149 pounds. The men’s gymnastics team took first place at the WindyCity Invitational in Chicago, Ill., Saturday with a score of213.00. The margin of victory over second place Iowa was 4.25points (208.75). Though the Buckeyes did not place first in anyindividual events, the team won every event except for vault wherethey placed second behind Minnesota. Randy Monahan(So./Elizabethtown, Pa.) placed first in the all-around competitionby more than a point with a score of 53.20. He not only won theall-around by over a point but finished in the top ten on everyevent. His best finishes were three-third place finishes on rings,vault and high bar. Jamey Houle (Jr./ Enfield, Conn.) complied51.75 points to place third in the all-around. The No. 7/9-rankedmen’s hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to eight with a 4-0victory over Findlay Tuesday (Jan. 7). Freshman goalie Dave Carusostopped all 15 Oiler shots for his second consecutive shutout,while Scott May (1-2-3) and Ryan Kesler (0-3-3) led the offensewith three points each. The squad stands in a tie for second placein the CCHA and returns to conference action with a two-game seriesagainst Bowling Green this week. The Buckeyes and Falcons will faceoff at 7:05 p.m. Thursday and Friday in Value City Arena. The men’sswimming and diving team (6-1) took its first loss of the season,145-96, to Indiana, Saturday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.Winners for the Buckeyes included Marty Tomes (Fr., Cincinnati,Ohio/Anderson) in the 200 free with a team season’s best time of1:41.77 and newly-elected captin Rob Kauscher (So., Cincinnati,Ohio/Anderson) in the 200-yard breaststroke, also with a teamseason’s best (2:05.12). The team will play host to its final homemeet of the season this Friday at 4 p.m. when it continues Big Tenplay vs. Michigan State. The Buckeyes will honor their threeseniors Vladi Dusil, Nick Rees and Matt Rusnov prior to the meet.The women’s swimming and diving team (7-2) played host to two meetsover the weekend, defeating Akron Friday, 140-103, and falling toNo. 14 Indiana, 150.50-84.50, Saturday. Stephanie Raezer (Jr.,Newark, Del./Glasgow) was a triple-individual winner for theBuckeyes, taking the 1000 free (10:17.43), the 500 free (5:04.91)and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.93), while Natalia Diea (Sr.,Austin, Texas/Univ. of Texas) swept diving events, taking first inboth the 1- and 3-meter dive. Saturday, the Buckeyes were only ableto win two events, but were led by freshman Deanna Strunk (WestLawn, Pa./Wilson), who set career bests in a win in the 400 IM(4:24.58) and in a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly(2:04.13). The team concludes its home schedule Friday at 4 p.m.against Michigan State. The synchronized swimming team will kickoff its 2003 season Saturday when the Buckeyes play host to the OSUTri-Meet against Miami (Ohio) and Walsh University. Routinecompetition will begin at approximately 12:45 p.m. The men’s andwomen’s track and field teams kicked off the 2003 indoor season asthey played host to Vanderbilt University and Central StateUniversity in the non-team scoring 2003 Buckeye Invitational.Highlighting the event for the Buckeyes were junior thrower DanTaylor, who placed first in the men’s shot put with a mark of 61feet 10.5 inches. Senior jumper Tami Smith earned a first placestanding in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet 9.75 inches, whichmerits a provision qualification for NCAA competition, and juniorBecky Heintz, who set a new program record in the pole vault. OhioState senior sprinter Greg Norman established a new French FieldHouse record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.88 to placefirst in the event. The women’s hockey team travels to St. Cloud,Minn., to take on the St. Cloud State Huskies. The teams face offat 2:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the National Hockey Center. TheBuckeyes have outshot their opponents in 12 of the last 15 contestsand are outshooting their opponents, 58-447, this season. They areaveraging 27.4 shots per game compared to their opponent’s 22.4shots per game. OSU has held its opponents scoreless on 87-of-99power-play chances this season, ranking 10th in the nation with an87.9 success rate. With a 17.0 power play percentage, the Buckeyesare ranked 12th in the nation (18/106). Men’s Volleyball (1-0)defeated Concordia 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-27) Monday evening. TomTrantow and Mark Greaves had 12 kills each for OSU with MikeWauligman adding 11. OSU hosts George Mason (1-1) at 7 p.m.Wednesday in St. John Arena. The rifle squad lost at Akron 3,804 to3,750 on Saturday. Abhijeet Konduskar took top honors in both airrifle (389) and smallbore (587). Ryan Kohatus was second insmallbore (574). The women’s basketball (11-3, 2-1 Big Ten) teamdebuted at No. 23 in the Associated Press poll this week. This isthe first Top 25 ranking for Ohio State since the 1998-99 seasonand the first under head coach Jim Foster, who took over the helmof the Buckeye program in April 2002. The Buckeye Basketball withJim Foster Show began its 10-week run last Wednesday night. For thefirst time, the show will be syndicated and carried statewide. Theshow, which is hosted by WBNS’ Ryan Miller, will be aired on ONNWednesdays at 7 p.m., on Central Ohio Sport TV Wednesdays at 7 p.m.and replayed Thursdays at 9 p.m. and on Fox Sports Net statewideThursdays at 11:30 a.m. No. 23 women’s basketball team used an 18-5run in the second period, strong high-low play and solid outsideshooting to beat Michigan State, 70-65, Thursday night in ValueCity Arena. Ohio State outscored the Spartans, 30-20, in the paint,earned 23 assists compared to MSU’s 14 and shot .519 (27-52) forthe night. Senior Courtney Coleman led all scorers with 22 pointsoff 7-of-10 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high sevenrebounds. Junior LaToya Turner and sophomore Caity Matter eachadded 13 points and Allen scored nine points for Ohio State. Turnerdished out a career-high five assists, blocked three shots andearned two steals against Michigan State. The Buckeyes fell toIndiana, 54-50, Sunday afternoon in Assembly Hall (Bloomington,Ind.). Coleman earned her first double-double of her senior year(14th overall) with 13 points and a game- and season-high 12rebounds. Matter added 11 points and freshman Kim Wilburn earned acareer-best seven steals and played all forty minutes vs. theHoosiers. The men’s tennis team recently competed at the MilwaukeeTennis Classic (longest running collegiate tennis tournament) inMilwaukee, Wis. Jan. 7-11. Buckeyes Conor Casey, Brenton Contini,Scott Green and Kevin McLean all advanced out of the first round ofaction, but fell in the second round of 32 players. The duo ofCasey and Contini Jeadvanced out of a 32-player doubles draw,however, fell in the second round of action. Next up for theBuckeyes, the team will travel to Houston, Texas Friday-Sunday forthe Houston Invite. They will open up their 2003 season at home onJan. 22 against Butler and Toledo. The fencing team dominated thisweekend at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill., winning all ofits matches. The women went 5-0 and the men 4-0. Teams which fellvictim to Ohio State included North Carolina, Fairleigh Dickinson,Lawrence, Temple, Johns Hopkins and Wayne State. On the women’sside, Ohio State defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 23-4, Lawrence, 26-1and North Carolina, 22-5 and Temple, 17-10. The men also dominatedall four teams they faced: North Carolina, 25-2, Wayne State, 25-2,Johns Hopkins, 22-5 and Lawrence 26-1. The Buckeyes willparticipate the second of three North American Cups when they headwest to San Diego, Calif., for the three-day individual competitionJan 17-19. The Buckeyes will play host to the Ohio State Duals Jan.25-26 at French Field House on the Ohio State campus.
