No. 11 Volleyball Loses To No. 9 Penn State In Five Games – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (6-5, Big Ten 0-2) women’s volleyball team held a 2-0 lead over ninth-ranked Penn State (12-1, 2-0), but lost to the Nittany Lions, 3-2 (23-30, 22-30, 30-26, 30-20, 15-9) Saturday night in Rec Hall. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) continued her hot streak with a match-high 27 kills, adding a team-high 12 digs. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) added a season-high 16 kills and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) 10. Penn State’s Ashley Pederson (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored a team-high 14 kills with Syndie Nadeau (So., St. Georges, Quebec) and Mishka Levy (Sr., Houston, Texas) adding 11 each.
Game one was tied at 11 after six ties. A solo block by Stiling, a kill by Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and an ace serve by Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) gave the Buckeyes a 14-11 lead. At 16-13, OSU opened a six-point advantage (19-13) with two kills by Gordon and a PSU error. The Nittany Lions closed the lead at 25-23. Four consecutive kills by Gordon and an OSU block by Gordon and Stephanie Higgins (Sr., Biggsville, Ill.) ended the game at 30-23. OSU hit .257 for the game to .125 for Penn State.
Game two started with eight ties, the last at 10. OSU took a 12-10 lead with a Hagerty-Stiling block and a Hagerty kill. At 15-14, A Draeger kill and a block by Higgins and Draeger made it 17-14. At 19-16, A Draeger kill, a PSU error and a Hagerty kill opened the lead to 22-16 Buckeye lead. Penn State cut the lead to 22-20 with a Pederson kill, a Robyn Guokas (Sr., Burr Ridge, Ill.) ace serve, a block by Levy and Cara Smith (Jr., Lafayette, Ind.) and a Levy kill. OSU responded with a Stiling kill, a Gordon kill, an ace serve from Draeger, a Penn State error and a Stiling kill for a 27-20 lead. At 28-22, kills by Gordon and Higgins closed the game at 30-22. The Buckeyes hit .410 in the game to .086 for Penn State. Tied at eight in game three, a kill by Higgins, a PSU error and two ace serves from Gordon opened a 12-8 Buckeye lead. OSU held the lead until a Buckeye error tied the game at 21. After ties at 24 and 25 Smith’s kill gave Penn State a 26-25 lead. Kills by Smith and Nadeau opened a 28-25 PSU lead. Gordon’s kill cut the margin to 28-26, but a Buckeye service error made it 29-26 and an OSU error ended the game at 30-26, Penn State. The Nittany Lions hit .303 to .116 for the Buckeyes.
Two Buckeye errors and a kill by Pederson opened game four with a 3-0 lead for Penn State. At 3-1, two more OSU error opened a 5-1 Nittany Lion lead. The Buckeyes committed 12 hitting errors in the game and never closed the gap as PSU won 30-20. The Nittany Lions hit .184 for the game to -.047 for Ohio State.
Tied at two games each, game five started with a 2-0 lead for Penn State off a block by Nadeau and Guokas and a kill by Nadeau. OSU responded by taking a 3-2 lead with two kills by Draeger and a PSU error. Kills by Pederson and Stiling moved the score to four-all. A PSU block by Guokas and Levy and a kill by Stiling made it five-all. A Buckeye service error and a Pederson kill gave Penn State a 7-5 lead as OSU called time out. A Penn State error and a Whalen kill tied the game at seven. Penn State with a kill by Pederson, two from Sam Tortorello (Fr., Shorewood, Ill.) and two Buckeye errors gave the Nittany Lions a 12-7 lead. Gordon’s kill cut the margin to 12-8. Two kills by Nadeau set match point at 14-8. Gordon’s 27th kill of the match cut it to 14-9 but a Buckeye service error ended the game at 15-9 for Penn State, giving the Nittany Lions a 3-2 victory. PSU hit .350 for the game to .120 for Ohio State.
Penn State hit .196 for the match to .168 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 69-57 advantage in kills. Ohio State edged the Nittany Lions in aces, 9-7 with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up 15 service errors to nine for Penn State. Each squad had 63 digs with PSU’s Hilary Sexton (Sr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) collecting a match-high 18. Penn State controlled the net with a 14-9 advantage in blocks. PSU’s Levy (1-6) and Guokas (2-5) shared match-high honors with seven blocks each. OSU’s Whalen had a match-high 56 assists for her career-high. Penn State’s Tortorello had 50.
Ohio State continues on the road next week when the Buckeyes face Michigan State at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4 and Michigan at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5.
Ohio State Notes:
Stacey Gordon’s 27 kills extended her consecutive matches with double-figure kills to 27. She now has double-figure kills in 40 of 42 career matches. It is also her 16th match with 20 or more kills. Gordon, with 12 digs against Penn State now has 26 career matches with double-figure digs and has 25 matches with double-figure kills and digs in her career.
Heather Whalen had a career-high 56 assists in the match. Her previous best was 54 at Indiana in 2000.
Suzie Stiling had a season-high 16 kills. Her previous high this season was 14 at Illinois-Chicago.
Stacey Gordon, for the second time this season, had three aces in a match. She previously had three aces against Miami (Ohio).
Brie Hagerty had career-highs of nine kills, seven digs and two aces in the match. Her previous highs were three kills at Indiana and an ace and five digs against Miami (Ohio).
Shelly Draeger equaled her season high of 11 kills against Penn State. She had 11 against Loyola-Chicago. Draeger recorded a career-high eight assists in the match. Her previous best was six at Michigan in 2001.
