The women’s soccer team (3-4-0, 1-0-0) commences its Big Tenhome schedule as it welcomes Purdue University (6-2-0, 2-0-0),ranked 19th in both the NSCAA/adidas and SoccerBuzz national pollsthis week, (6-1, 2-0) to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Friday at5 p.m. and Indiana University (4-2-1, 1-0-1) for a Sunday afternoonmatch set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. Senior forward Lindsay Eckles, aHilliard, Ohio native, set the school record for career shotattempts in OSU’s 2-1 victory over Northwestern. Eckles, whoregistered three shots during the match, set the mark with herinitial shot of the first period. Eckles entered the game tied withformer Buckeye great Lisa Sutmiller (1994-97) with 204 careerstrikes and has now staked claim to the top spot with a careerledger of 207. 11th-ranked women’s volleyball (6-3) opens Big TenConference action Wednesday at Indiana (10-2). The Buckeyes thenplay at No. 9 Penn State (10-1) Saturday. OSU is coming off a 3-1(29-31, 30-28, 30-24, 30-21) win over Miami (Ohio). Stacey Gordonhad a match-high 29 kills and recorded a season-high 20 digs in thevictory over the RedHawks. Heather Whalen started the match atsetter and recorded season-highs of 51 assists, 11 digs, threekills and an ace serve. Whalen got the start after injuries toKatie Virtue (hand) and Jackie Schardt (concussion). OSU has threeadditional players; Maria Pongonis (foot), Katherine Grant (elbow)and Anna Andersson (knee) along with Virtue and Schardt that arecurrently not available due to their injuries. The No. 19 fieldhockey team shut out Miami (Ohio), 4-0, Sunday in its home opener.Vanessa Immordino, Cammie Trainer, Lucy Clayton and Stacey Toddeach scored a goal. The Buckeyes tallied 22 shots and eight penaltycorners. OSU starts the Big Ten season with a trip to Ann Arbor.They will battle the Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m. Friday in AnnArbor, Mich. The women’s cross country team won the Queen CityInvitational Sept. 20. The team finished the race with a score of43 points. The event took place at Mount Airy Forest in Cincinnati,Ohio. Leading the way for the Buckeyes was Chelsea Poling (Fr.,Toledo, Ohio) running a time of 19:29.6 to place sixth overall. Theteam returns to action Oct. 5 at the Notre Dame Invitational inSouth Bend, Ind. The women’s tennis team played host to the firstOSU/Prince Cup over the weekend. Buckeyes Erica Fisk and SadhafPervez led the way for Ohio State, as each advanced to thesemifinal round. The tandem of Fisk and Pervez joined together toadvance to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. The team willcompete in the Cissie Leary Invitational at Penn this weekend. Thewomen’s golf team finished seventh last Tuesday with a score of 912(298-311-303) at the 2002 NCAA Fall Preview. The event was held atthe par 72 Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue Universityalso will play host to the 2003 NCAA Championships in May.
Ohio State junior Allison Hanna finished in a tie for fifth place with five other individuals at 221 (73-73-73). Sophomore Kristen White shot a 70 in the final round to tie for 28th place (75-82-70=228). White’s 70 was the lowest round of the event by a Buckeye. Lindsay Knowlton tied for 43rd (74-79-79=232) while newcomer Mary Ann Plunkett finished tied for 59th (80-77-79=236). Erin Borowiec tied for 62nd (76-82-79=237).
The squad is currently competing at the Mason Rudolph Championships in Franklin, Tenn. The Buckeyes stand in fourth place with a score of 606 after two rounds. White is tied for third place with a score of 247 individually. The final round of the event is scheduled for today.
The men’s soccer team fought off a scrappy Bowling Green Falconteam to win, 3-2, in double-overtime Friday in Bowling Green, Ohio.Matt McCune (Jr., Westerville, Ohio) connected on the game-winningtouch shot from the right side of the box during the secondovertime, the first goal of his Buckeye career. The win improvedOSU’s record to 4-3 on the season. The Buckeyes return to action at7:30 p.m. Friday when they open their Big Ten schedule against theWisconsin Badgers at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. OSUwill then take on Akron at Noon Sunday at Jesse Owens MemorialStadium. The men’s golf team opened its 2002-03 campaign at theSooner Invitational in Frisco, Texas. Zach Doran tied a courserecord on the final day of competition shooting a 65 to put him ina tie for second place. The men’s golf team returns to action thisSaturday at the Northern Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Themen’s hockey team was picked to finish fourth in the CCHA in boththe preseason media and coaches polls, the league announced at itsannual media day in Detroit.
