COLUMBUS, Ohio– Ohio State freshman tailback Maurice Clarett underwent arthroscopic surgery early Tuesday to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. The surgery was performed by Dr. Christopher Kaeding, who serves as chief orthopedic consultant for the Ohio State football team.
Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has listed Clarett as “questionable” for this week’s game with Cincinnati.
“We will have a better idea as to his availability on Thursday,” said Tressel. “I know Maurice will want to play, but we will have to wait and see. From what our doctors have told me, everyone reacts a little differently to this type of procedure. For some, it is a couple of days. For other it can be seven days.”
Clarett injured his knee in the first quarter of last week’s 25-7 win over visiting Washington State. He went on to rush for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries, with 194 of those yards coming in the second half. He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week following the game.
The 6-0, 230-pound Clarett currently is third nationally in rushing with an average of 157 yards per game. He leads the Big Ten in both rushing and scoring.
If Clarett cannot play Saturday, sophomores Lydell Ross and Maurice Hall and freshman JaJa Riley will share the tailback responsibilities.
