Ninth-ranked volleyball (5-3) won two of three matches last week. OSU went on the road and defeated Illinois-Chicago 3-1 (30-28, 30-13, 23-30, 30-24) behind a career-high 33 kills by Stacey Gordon. The Buckeyes defeated Loyola-Chicago 3-1 (30-19, 31-29, 22-30, 30-23) in the semifinals of the Ohio State Invitational Friday. OSU lost to Texas 0-3 (23-30, 23-30, 28-30) in the championship match of the Invitational Saturday. Suzie Stiling and Stacey Gordon were named to the all-tournament team. Ohio State hosts Miami (Ohio) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes do not play again until Wednesday, Sept. 25 when they open Big Ten play at Indiana.
The No. 16 field hockey team lost, 3-1, to Kent State Wednesday in Kent, Ohio. The Buckeyes played without three of their top players because of injuries. The team then traveled to Syracuse, N.Y. to compete in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge. OSU defeated Villanova, 6-2, Friday for the first game of the challenge. The six goals were the most scored since the 2000 season when the Buckeyes beat Central Michigan, 9-0. Leticia Fragapane (So., Mendoza, Argentina) and Vanessa Immordino (Jr., Roseland, N.J.) each recorded two goals. Fragapane, Lucy Clayton (So., Scarborough, England) and Stacey Todd (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) all scored their first goals of the season. The Buckeyes could not overcome Syracuse loosing 1-0 in overtime on Sunday. OSU goalkeeper Lara Koole (Fr., Breukelen, Netherlands) recorded a game high of six saves. OSU travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Louisville Cardinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Buckeyes plays host to Miami (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Sunday in the home opener on the North Turf Field.
The men’s soccer team rallied to score two second-half goals to knock off Villanova, 2-0, in the Penn State/NIKE Classic Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa. With the victory, Ohio State snaps its three-game losing skid and improves its overall record to 3-3 on the season while Villanova drops to 2-4 on the year after falling twice in the tournament. The 2-0 deficit proved to be too much for the Wildcats as Ohio State limited Villanova to just three second-half shots in the victory. Buckeye goalkeeper Jason Wimmert (Fr., Loveland, Ohio) picked up his first win of the season. The Buckeyes are back in action at 4 p.m. Friday at Bowling Green. OSU will return home to open the Big Ten season against Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Women’s soccer opens up Big Ten play at Northwestern at 2 p.m. Sunday. The squad topped Pittsburgh, 1-0, in the OSU Invitational last weekend. In the game, Lindsay Eckles tied the school record for career shot attempts. She had five in the game to push her total to 204.
The women’s tennis team will play host to the OSU/Prince Cup at the Stickney Tennis Center this weekend. The tournament will run Friday through Sunday and includes players from a number of schools, including Notre Dame and LSU, in both a singles and a doubles draw. Buckeye junior Erica Fisk was ranked No. 69 in the ITA preseason rankings, while senior Sadhaf Pervez holds down the No. 89 spot.
Senior defenseman Scott Titus was named captain of the men’s hockey team, while senior defender Eric Skaug and junior center R.J. Umberger were named alternate captains for the 2002-03 squad.
