COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mike Doss and Donnie Nickey have a lot in common. Both are senior football players at Ohio State. Both are returning starters. Both play the safety position – Doss is the Buckeyes’ strong safety and Nickey the free safety. Both have won All-America acclaim – Doss is a two-time All-American and Nickey was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team at the conclusion of the 1999 season.
Now, there is one more common thread that ties the two together. Both are captains of the 2002 Buckeyes.
Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel made the announcement today, following a team vote Monday night.
“Mike and Donnie have been and will continue to be excellent leaders for us, both on and off the field,” Tressel said. “They are quality young men, who the other players look up to.”
“To have the respect of your teammates is a tremendous honor,” said Nickey, a product of Plain City, Ohio. “But it is also a tremendous responsibility; one that I take very seriously. I am not a real vocal guy, but I can be if I have to. I hope my work ethic is what motivates the other players on this team.”
Noted Doss, who hails from Canton, Ohio, “I am honored to be able to represent the team and this university. I can’t wait for the season to get started. I just want to do whatever it takes to help this team win and reach its goals.”
Tressel said an offensive captain would be selected on a game-to-game basis. Junior quarterback Craig Krenzel will fill that role for Saturday’s season opener against visiting Texas Tech.
