MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Janel McCarvel had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Corrin Von Wald scored 17 points to lead No. 18 Minnesota to a 79-64 victory Thursday night over Ohio State.
Lindsay Whalen added 16 points and to help Minnesota (18-4, 8-3 Big Ten) avenge its most recent conference Ten loss with its fourth straight win and sixth in seven games. The Gophers withstood 29 points by the Buckeyes’ Courtney Coleman
The midseason slide continued for Ohio State (10-12, 5-6), which has lost six of seven games. Its only victory was a 70-66 upset of Minnesota on Jan. 25 in Columbus.
Minnesota trailed only once in the game, when Coleman’s layup gave Ohio State a 10-9 lead with 14:40 left in the first half. Then Gophers went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by Whalen’s mid-air scoop shot off an errant pass.
The Gophers stretched the lead to 71-50 on Whalen’s free throw with 5:16 left. Ohio State managed to cut the lead to 73-64 with 2:12 left, but couldn’t get any closer.
With McCarvel controlling the boards and throwing long outlet passes to Minnesota’s speedy guards, the Gophers weren’t threatened the rest of the way.
Kadidja Andersson added 12 points for Minnesota, and D’wan Shackleford had 11 points for Ohio State.
