COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio State’s Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and Jen Miller (Jr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) can add to their collection of honors for the 2001 season. The freshman forward and junior defender were selected to the Soccer Buzz All-Great Lakes Region second and third teams, respectively, the national online women’s soccer publication today announced. In addition, Grubb, the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was one of 13 first-year players selected to the all-freshman team. The awards mark the second time Grubb and Miller have earned regional recognition for their outstanding play in 2001. Both also were 2001 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Second Team selections.
Grubb led Ohio State in every offensive category in 2001, including goals (10), assists (5), points (25), shots (61) and game-winning goals (3). The rookie forward was a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week honoree (Sept. 3 and Oct. 29), earning her first conference award for scoring three goals in the Buckeyes’ first two regular season matches, against Wright State and Kent State. Her outstanding performance in Ohio State’s 2-1 upset of then-No. 4 Penn State Oct. 26-she scored the first goal and assisted in the gamewinner-earned her offensive player of the week honors for the second time. Grubb capped off a phenomenal regular season when she scored the game-tying goal and assisted in the overtime gamewinner against Purdue in the Big Ten tournament.
Miller was at the helm of an impressive Buckeye backfield in 2001, playing in all 18 matches and recording a goal and two assists. She was the Big Ten’s first defensive player of the week honoree (Sept. 10) for her performance in Ohio State’s 2-1 upset of then-No. 9 Connecticut Sept. 7. Miller became the first OSU women’s soccer player named to the Big Ten all-tournament team in program history after helping the Buckeyes to their first win in the Big Ten tournament since 1998. Ohio State defeated Purdue, 2-1, in overtime Nov. 8 and advanced to the semifinal round. Ohio State, after posting a 10-9-1 overall record and finishing fourth in the conference with a 5-4-1 record, narrowly missed earning an at-large berth into the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes’ final match this year was a 2-0 decision to Penn State Nov. 9 in the Big Ten tournament semifinal.
