Cross Country Teams Fare Well at Miami Fall Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The men’s and women’s cross country teams began their seasons with quality showings at the Miami Cross Country Fall Classic. The men’s squad placed second out of seven teams, scoring 43 points, while the women finished fifth in their race with a total of 112 points. Host Miami took the top spot in both races. The No. 2 finish ties the Buckeye men’s finish from one year ago and marks the fourth consecutive season the men have opened their season with a Top 2 finish.

Pacing the men’s team was captain J.J. O’Rielly (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) who ran to a second-place finish, completing the 8,000-meter race in 24:54. O’Rielly placed second in the Miami Fall Classic one year ago as well. Sophomore Jon White (So., Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 25:22, and Josh Folger (Jr., Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) rounded out the Buckeyes in the Top 10, placing eighth (25:36). Ohio State’s three Top 10 finishers was second only to Miami, who had four runners in the Top 10. Daniel Glaz (Fr., Palis Hills, Ind./A.A. Stagg) captured 11th place (25:37) in his first collegiate competition. Rob Myers (Sr., Rushville, Ohio/Fairfield Union), Jacob McCauley (Fr., Enon, Ohio/Greenon) and Chris Basinger (Fr., Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) finished within four seconds of each other, to take the 16th, 18th and 19th spots, respectively.

In the women’s race, freshman Robyn Detty (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) got off to a quick start, leading the team with a 12th-place finish (23:16). Kati Stevens (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took 14th in the race, completing the 6,000-meter course in 23:28. Brooke Patterson (So., Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) took 25th with a time of 23:50, with Lyndsi Gay (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) just one second behind in her first meet as a Buckeye.

Next up for both teams is the 2001 Indiana State Invitational, Sept. 29 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet, hosted by Indiana State University, will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course and feature over 17 teams.
