Ohio State’s Doss Named to Thorpe Watch List – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State All-America strong safety Mike Doss has been named to the 2001 Pre-season Jim Thorpe Award “Watch List.” The 33-player list was announced earlier today by the Jim Thorpe Association.%^$
%^$The Thorpe Award, which has been presented annually since 1986, goes to the top defensive back in college football. Ohio State cornerback Antione Winfield won the award in 1998.%^$
%^$Doss, a junior from Canton, Ohio, will be in his second year as a starter for the Buckeyes. The hard-hitting safety led the team in tackles last year with a career high 94, including 73 solos. He also had three interceptions and six passes broken up and scored twice on fumble recoveries – one of those a 73-yard run against Michigan State. His performance earned him consensus All-Big Ten honors and a first-team spot on the 2000 Sporting News All-America Team.%^$
%^$”I am honored to be included on the list of candidates,” said the 5-11, 203-pound Doss. “But my primary focus right now is helping this team achieve the goals we have set for our team.”%^$
%^$The Thorpe Award selection committee will narrow the current field to 10 in the first week in November and will announce its three finalists on the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 on ESPN’s College Football Awards Show in Orlando.
