%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State will serve as host of the 2001 Columbus Inner-City Games (ICG) on Saturday. The ICG began in Los Angeles in 1991 and has since spread to 14 major U.S. cities serving over half a million youngsters.
%^$The games were initiated in Columbus last August thanks to the efforts of Arnold Schwarzenegger, national chairman of the Inner-City Games Foundation, and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, who is serving as the Honorary Chairperson for the Columbus Inner-City Games.
%^$The ICG offers a wide array of sports clinics and competitions from traditional games such as baseball, basketball, track and soccer, to less traditional sports like horseback riding, tennis, golf, fencing and martial arts. The ICG also provides opportunities for young people to express themselves through art, dance, music and dramatic arts programs. In addition, many participating cities offer scholarship programs for participants desiring to pursue higher education.
%^$Recognizing that the majority of drug-use, youth violence and teen pregnancies occur during the summer months, ICG provides youngsters a positive alternative during summer vacation. The Inner-City Games Foundation also offers after-school programs for youth during the school year.
%^$Cendant Corporation and Hummer are the national sponsors for the games, with Knowledge Adventure serving as the National Educational Software Sponsor. Local sponsors for the ICG Columbus include Ameritech/SBC, The Arnold Fitness Weekend and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ohio/Kentucky.
%^$The Inner-City Games Columbus headquarters are located at the Blackburn Recreation Center, 263 Carpenter Street in Columbus. For further information contact ICG at 614-257-1678 or via e-mail at ICGColumbus@aol.com.
