Dick Tressel Named Associate Director of Football Operations – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State Director of Athletics Andy Geiger today named Dick Tressel associate director of football operations.
“We are adding another quality individual to The Ohio State University,” Geiger said. “Dick has been an athletic director and football coach for the past 23 years. He understands the goals of this institution and will be a great resource to our student-athletes.”
Tressel will assist Bob Tucker, director of football operations, in all aspects of the team’s day-to-day operations. He also will monitor the academic progress of the student-athletes, coordinate community outreach and service programs and serve as a liaison between the football office and other support services at OSU. He also will work with the OSU Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB).
Tressel is the brother of head football coach Jim Tressel.
“We have so many opportunities to help our student-athletes progress academically at Ohio State,” Jim Tressel said. “We also have many opportunities to reach out to the community. With so many resources available to us in our department, we need an experienced person to help manage this. He will help us utilize our resources efficiently and effectively.”
The 53-year-old Tressel has spent the past 23 years at Hamline University in Minnesota, where he was both head football coach and director of athletics.
“This is a great opportunity to help Ohio State student-athletes and the football program be as good as they can be,” Dick Tressel said. “I’m just one more resource to help the OSU athletic program reach its goals. OSU has excellent academic services and support staff. I am excited to meet and work with all of these people. Andy Geiger’s goals are to be the best athletics department in the country and OSU is a place where he can achieve this goal. There is no glass ceiling at a place like this.” Tressel compiled an overall record of 124-102-2 with the Pipers before resigning at the end of the 2000 season. He was the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1984, leading Hamline to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.
In 1970, Tressel earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Baldwin-Wallace College. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree in physical education from Florida State University. In 1996, he earned a doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota.
Tressel and his wife, Connie, have three sons, Mike, Ben and Luke. Ben and Luke played football for their father at Hamline. Mike played at Cornell College in Iowa and now is an assistant football coach at Wartburg College. Ben is currently an assistant football coach at Hamline. Luke is a graduate assistant football coach at the University of Minnesota.
