The Ohio State Buckeyes held a non-padded workout Friday at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center, after which head coach Jim Tressel said fans can expect to see a lot of first-team showdowns this spring.
“I like the idea of the first-team offense going up against the first-team defense,” he said. “I think we get a better look at what we can do, and it has been my experience that those types of drills bring out the best in our players. There is something special about playing against the best.”
Tressel is anxious to see his team in full pads on Saturday morning. “We have been learning and drilling, now we will see if we can add hitting to that,” he said. “I want to see who wants to hit.”
Asked who had impressed him thus far in spring practice, Tressel replied, “Really everyone. I like the enthusiasm and energy level as a whole.”
With respect to the quarterbacks, he said, “Ideally, we would like to have a No. 1 guy and a No. 2, who we wouldn’t worry about if he had to go into the game. The starter would probably play 70 or 75 percent of the time, but the other guy would get some playing time too. That is one of the things we are trying to determine. And we will know a little more tomorrow after we put the pads on.”
