%^$A spirited 30-minute “Hoot and Holler” drill highlighted Saturday morning’s two-hour practice session at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. It was the Buckeyes first day in full pads.%^$
%^$”‘Hoot and Holler’ gets everyone’s blood flowing,” said head coach Jim Tressel. “It is a pride thing. With your teammates looking on, you want to excel.%^$
%^$”We did this drill here when Earle Bruce was the coach and I continued it at Youngstown State. I think the players really like it.”%^$
%^$The five-on-five drill pits offense against defense, with the offense trying to get 10 yards on three plays and the defense trying to stop the offense. Players, including kickers, rotate in and out of the lineup.%^$
%^$”It was fun today,” Tressel said. “The fun of football is hitting. Enthusiasm comes from spirit and we had a lot of spirit out there. Now, we need to see if we can keep it up on Monday (the Buckeyes’ next practice). Consistency is the key.”%^$
%^$The Buckeyes also spent time working on their two-minute drill. “We want our offense to be able to move the ball when the game is on the line, and we want the defense to be able to stop them,” said Tressel. “You can’t spend too much time on the two-minute offense.”
