Columbus, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said today the Department of Athletics will donate 50 cents from each ticket sold to Saturday’s Spring Football Game to the Miracle For Madison Fund, and an additional 50 cents from the sale of each ticket to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
Madison Reed, the daughter of former Ohio State athletes Carl (wrestling) and Annette (gymnastics) Reed, suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a neurological disease that is the number one genetic killer of children under two. The Ohio State University Medical Center is one of the nation’s leaders in SMA research.
Stefanie Spielman, the wife for former Ohio State football All-America linebacker Chris Spielman, has breast cancer and is being treated at the Arthur James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State, again one of the world’s leading research centers.
“We are delighted to be able to help in these causes,” Tressel said. “The research going on at the Ohio State Medical Center in both areas is simply phenomenal. Hopefully, someday these two diseases will be wiped out. But until they are, they need our support. These two causes are all the more special because they directly touch the lives of members of the Ohio State family.”
Only a limited number of tickets remain for Saturday’s game, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. in Crew Stadium.
Ohio State Director of Athletics Andy Geiger said the department hopes to donate approximately $10,000 to each fund.
“Our prayers are with both families and with everyone who suffers from these diseases,” he said. “We are pleased to be able to do this.”
