With approximately 300 fans, high school coaches and former players looking on, the Gray team defeated the Scarlet squad, 22-19, Wednesday in a special teams scrimmage at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center. Walk-on kicker Jeremy Uhlenhake’s 32-yard field goal on the final play of the scrimmage snapped a 19-all tie.
As a result of the loss, the Gray team ate beans and drank only water at the evening training table, while the winners could have anything on the menu.
The Gray team led 19-12 after Steve Bellisari threw a touchdown pass to tight end Ben Hartsock on a fake field goal. But the Scarlet tied it on an electrifying 65-yard punt return by Chris Vance. Uhlenhake’s game winner came after the Scarlet gave the Gray the ball at the Scarlet 15-yard line.
“We like to give our players a game-like scenario and I think we did that today,” said OSU coach Jim Tressel.
Special teams coordinator Ken Conatser was pleased with the effort he saw. “I thought our players really got into it. Special teams can be a difference maker. I think we showed our players today why we emphasize special teams play so much.”
