Men’s Hockey Falls to UNO, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

OMAHA, Neb. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team tallied the only goal of the third period but it wasn’t enough, as the Buckeyes fell, 2-1, to Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs tonight at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The best-of-three series is tied at one, as the Buckeyes posted a 5-4 win in overtime last night.
With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 17-17-2 overall. UNO improves to 23-14-3. The squads will meet at 8:05 p.m. (EST) Sunday for the deciding third game of the series in Omaha, Neb. For the second-consecutive game, the Mavericks tallied first, as Billy Pugliese scored at the 5:25 mark. UNO outshot Ohio State, 8-4, in the period.
The Mavericks tallied the only goal of the second period. David Brisson got the puck past OSU goalie Mike Betz after a faceoff win by Andrew Wong. UNO outshot Ohio State, 11-8, in the stanza.
In the third period, Miguel Lafleche tallied the only goal for the Buckeyes, his second of the series, at the 10:09 mark, with Dave Steckel screening UNO goalie Dan Ellis. Doug Andress, who kept the puck in the zone on the play, and Reed Whiting posted the assists for Ohio State. The Buckeyes outshot UNO, 7-4, in the stanza.
Betz stopped 21-of-23 UNO shots in 59:30, while Ellis made 18 saves on 19 Ohio State shots.
Ohio State was 0-for-6 on the power play and held UNO scoreless on its three opportunities.
