COLUMBUS, Ohio – The visiting RedHawks of Miami (Ohio) University tallied three unanswered goals to post a 4-1 victory over the Ohio State men’s hockey team at Value City Arena. The teams will complete the home-and-home series at 7:35 p.m. Saturday in Goggin Ice Arena.
With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 14-11-2 overall, 11-8-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The RedHawks improve to 16-11-2, 13-8-1. Ohio State now stands in fifth place in the CCHA, while Miami remains in third.
Miami tallied the first goal of the game, as Chris Knupp picked up a loose puck in front of the Buckeyes’ net and got it past OSU goalie Mike Betz. In the second period, OSU’s Dave Steckel tied the game at the 4:35 mark with his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Steckel scored on the rebound of a Mike McCormick shot that hit both posts and came out.
The RedHawks scored the last two goals of the period to end the stanza up by two, 3-1. Derek Edwardson scored at the 13:29 mark, while Pat Leahy tallied with just 29 seconds remaining on the rebound of an Edwardson shot. Leahy ended the scoring with a short-handed, empty-net tally with 32 seconds left in the game.
Both teams were held scoreless on the power play. OSU was 0-for-4 in the game, while Miami did not score on their three opportunities. The game broke an OSU streak of seven-consecutive games with a power-play goal.
The Buckeyes outshot the RedHawks, 34-31. Betz made 27 saves for Ohio State. David Burleigh made 33 saves in net for Miami.
