COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by the No. 1-ranked Michigan State Spartans, 7-2, tonight in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action at Value City Arena. MSU swept the season series with the Buckeyes, as it posted a 5-2 win last night.
With the loss, their third-consecutive defeat, the Buckeyes fall to 16-13-2 overall, 13-10-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. MSU, the CCHA regular season champion, moves to 26-4-4 overall, 19-4-3 in conference play.
The Spartans scored the first four goals of the game, including three in the first period by Adam Hall, John-Michael Liles and Damon Whitten.
Rustyn Dolyny game MSU a 4-0 lead with a short-handed goal 15:10 into the second period. The Buckeyes got on the board at the 16:27 mark of the second period, as Ryan Smith tallied his first goal of the season, assisted by Chris Olsgard and Jason Crain.
MSU outscored the Buckeyes 3-1 in the third period. The Spartans’ Sean Patchell tallied a power-play goal at the 9:41 mark before Ohio State’s Scott May scored less than a minute later. Daymen Bencharski and Yan Des Gagne added assists on the play. MSU ended the scoring with goals by Brad Fast and John Nail at the 12:59 and 15:22 marks respectively.
Goalie Mike Betz made 30 saves for the Buckeyes in 55:22 of action, while Kelly Holowaty stopped the two shots he faced in the last 4:38. Ryan Miller made 25 saves for the Spartans.
MSU was 2-for-5 on the power play, while OSU did not score on its two opportunities.
