The Student Basketball Section will be referred to as the “Buckeye Nut House” for seasons to come. The new name was unveiled at the 8:00 minute media timeout in second half of the Buckeyes’ 63-61 victory over Illinois on February 22, 2001. Throughout the Big Ten Basketball season, The Department of Athletics sponsored a naming contest on ohiostatebuckeyes.com. More than 500 entries were received during the six week campaign. One name best represented Ohio State and the student body and several students submitted the winning name. A random drawing was used to select the winner of the all expense paid trip to the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. Ryan Schaffernocker, a freshman from Canton, Ohio majoring in Material Science Engineering, submitted the winning entry.
The Department of Athletics thanks Jefferson Commons, The Buckeye Corner and the Buckeye Hall of Fame Caf© for their support of “The Nut House”.
