COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to top-ranked Michigan State tonight in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action at Value City Arena.
With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 16-12-2 overall, 13-9-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. MSU, which clinched the CCHA title last night, moves to 25-4-4 overall, 18-4-3 in conference play.
The Spartans tallied the first two goals of the game, as Troy Ferguson scored at the 6:52 mark, followed by John Nail 11:09, into the first stanza.
The Buckeyes rallied to tie the game at two. R.J. Umberger scored with 2:30 left in the first period, assisted by Nick Ganga and Eric Skaug, to cut the Spartans’ lead to one. In the second stanza, Jean-Francois Dufour scored on the rebound of an Umberger shot off a Scott May face-off win to tie the game at two.
Michigan State then scored three unanswered goals to claim the win. MSU’s Brian Maloney posted the game-winning goal at the 11:47 mark of the second period. The Spartans scored two goals in the third stanza, at the 2:46 and 16:12 marks, to put the game out of reach for the Buckeyes.
The Spartans outshot the Buckeyes, 34-27, including an 18-6 edge in the first period. Ohio State was 0-for-3 on the power play, while MSU scored two goals in four power-play chances.
The two teams return to Value City Arena Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
