COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mike Doss, Ohio State’s rock’em, sock’em hard hitting strong safety, is one of 12 semi-finalists for the 2001 Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually since 1986 to the nation’s best college defensive back.
The 12 semi-finalists were announced earlier this week by the Jim Thorpe Association, which is based in Oklahoma City. The list will be narrowed to three semi-finalists on Nov. 20 and the winner will be announced Dec. 6, during ESPN’s College Football Awards Show. The formal presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on Feb. 11, 2002.
Doss, clearly in the midst of his best year with the Buckeyes, leads the team in solo tackles, total tackles and tackles for loss. The 5-11, 203-pound junior from Canton, Ohio is tied for the team lead in sacks, has blocked two punts and has returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown.
Now in his second year as a starter, Doss won consensus All-Big Ten honors last year and was a named to a first-team berth on the Sporting News All-America team.
