COLUMBUS, Ohio–Doylan Robinson, a senior guard for the Ohio State men’s basketball team, has decided to forego his senior season to concentrate on academics.
Jim O’Brien, head coach of the Buckeyes, said it was a difficult decision to make for everyone involved.
“I am personally saddened that Doylan will no longer be with us on the court,” O’Brien said. “He has been through a lot of adversity but through it all has been a stand-up guy.”
Robinson, a native of Akron, Ohio, played in 31 games as a sophomore and junior after sitting out the 1998-99 season because he did not qualify academically out of Buchtel High School.
He battled injuries, playing in 22 games, as a sophomore. He was involved in a car accident Dec. 3, 2000 and played just nine games as a junior.
Robinson, a family resource management major at Ohio State, is ineligible academically for the first quarter this year and would not have become eligible until early January.
“Doylan and I have come to the conclusion it is in his best interest to spend all of his free time on his academics,” O’Brien said. “He will not be available the first half of our season. With only a portion of his basketball career remaining, we felt it best for him to forego basketball to concentrate on completing his academic career.”
Robinson said he will miss basketball but his academic future is a priority.
“It was a very hard decision,” Robinson said. “It is just something I had to do to help me out with my future.”
