COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team scored three unanswered goals, including two in the third period, to defeat Notre Dame, 3-2, at Value City Arena in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association matchup. Sophomore Scott May led the Buckeyes with two goals, including the game-winner at the 13:16 mark of the third period.
With the win, the Buckeyes move to 1-0-1 overall and in the CCHA. Notre Dame drops to 0-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 in conference action. The teams tied, 4-4, in the series opener Saturday.
The Irish got on the board first, as Aaron Gill tallied at the 7:39 mark, assisted by Tom Galvin. Gill put in the rebound of his own shot for the score. Notre Dame then took a 2-0 lead, with Connor Dunlop shooting the puck in from the side of the net. The Irish out shot the Buckeyes, 13-10, in the period.
The Buckeyes dominated most of the second period, attempting 24 shots on goal, while the Irish had nine. Ohio State got 12 shots on net, but Irish goalie Morgan Cey stopped all 12. The Irish recorded five shots on net. The Buckeyes had their best chance on the power play, as Doug Andress hit two posts with a slap shot from the point but the puck did not go in.
Ohio State came out and controlled the final period, coming back from a 2-1 deficit for the win. Steckel tied the game at 2-all at the 8:41 mark. R.J. Umberger set up the goal, as he won the battle for the puck in the corner and hit Steckel alone just outside the crease. May scored the final goal of the game at the 13:16 mark, putting in his own rebound after Daymen Bencharski took a shot from just inside the blueline. OSU goaltender Mike Betz provided some nice saves in the final minutes to help preserve the victory for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State took only one penalty in the game, while Notre Dame had three. Neither team could score on the power play.
Ohio State next plays Oct. 26-27 at Bowling Green. The squads will face off at 7:05 both nights in the BGSU Ice Arena.
Ohio State postgame quotes:
Ohio State forward Scott May
We realized we couldn’t give up any more points this weekend. We need these points. This is a game you can look back on and say it was a big game in the point standings to get home ice advantage (for the CCHA playoffs). We were playing desperate tonight which was good.
Ohio State Coach John Markell
We started off slow but then we gave ourselves enough opportunities to score goals. I think Mike Betz made some outstanding plays. They had some chances to tie it in the end, but that is what good goaltending is about. You come to expect that sometimes. I thought both teams battled hard and it was a good clean hockey game.
