Women’s Hockey Stuns Bemidji State, 6-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team defeated Bemidji State, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Arena for the squad’s first series sweep of the season. After taking two games from the Beavers, the Buckeyes improve to 8-11-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the WCHA, and Bemidji State slips to 5-15-0 overall and 5-10-0 in the WCHA. Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) capped off an outstanding weekend with two goals and one assist, adding to her goal and assist from Friday. Corinne Rosen (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) notched three goals and an assist in the weekend series and Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ont./Bayside) picked up a goal and four assists through two games.%^$
%^$Rosen put the Buckeyes on the board first, beating out a 2-on-1 on the breakaway for an unassisted goal at 9:23 in the first stanza. Rosen’s goal was shorthanded, OSU’s first short-handed goal of the season.%^$
%^$At 4:51 in the second, Frost extended the Buckeyes’ lead to two. Frost passed the puck to Heather Farrell (Fr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret) in front of the Beaver net and Farrell fired it back to Frost, who slipped it past BSU goalie Anik Cote. Erin O’Grady (Fr., London, Ontario/Culver Academy) was credited with the secondary assist. Halcisak knocked in the next two goals for the Buckeyes-her first coming on the power play from Emily Hudak (So., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) and Frost at 17:19. At 18:39, Halcisak scored her seventh of the season with a beautiful diving shot to the far left corner of the Bemidji net. Ohio State skated into the second intermission with a 4-0 lead.%^$
%^$Lill Raynard scored what would be Bemidji State’s only goal of the game at 5:04 in the third period. Lisa Peters and Alicia Kinsman assisted on the goal. One minute later, OSU’s Lindsey Ogren (So., North Oaks, Minn./Moundsview) responded with her second of the season, an unassisted goal, at 6:10. At 7:28 in the third, O’Grady tallied her second of the season. Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview) collected a pass from Halcisak and fired off a shot which O’Grady deflected with her stick to put the Buckeyes ahead, 6-1.%^$
%^$OSU outshot BSU, 46-23, for a two-game total of 91-52. Buckeye goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) recorded 22 saves for the win and Cote stopped 40 Buckeye shots.%^$
%^$OSU converted on 2-of-5 power-play opportunities and held the Beavers scoreless through six opportunities.%^$
%^$Ohio State returns to the ice at 2:05 p.m. EST Saturday, Jan. 20 and Sunday, Jan. 21 against conference foe Wisconsin at the Capitol Ice Arena. The Buckeyes next home series is Feb. 2-3 against MSU, Mankato at the OSU Ice Arena.%^$
