Ohio State Game Notes
Attendance Record – The attendance at the game today, 98,124, set an Ohio Stadium record. The old mark of 96,721 was recorded against Miami (Ohio) earlier this season.
20-Minute Delay – The start of the game today was delayed 20 minutes because of rain showers.
First Score – For the first time this season, Ohio State scored a touchdown in its first drive of the game. The drive went 10 plays for 92 yards in 4:16. Jamar Martin scored a 1-yard touchdown to give OSU the 7-0 lead.
Tip Drill – OSU’s second touchdown of the afternoon was an 18-yard reception that was tipped by Ken-yon Rambo and caught by an alert Darnell Sanders. The TD was Sanders’ first of the season and the second of his career.
Long Punt – B.J. Sander’s 59-yard punt in the fourth quarter is the longest of his career. His previous high was a 55-yard kick recorded in the second quarter.
Another Defensive Score – After Brent Johnson knocked the ball loose from PSU quarterback Matt Senneca in the third quarter, Mike Collins scooped it up and ran 11 yards for the second touchdown of his career. He returned an interception 22 yards for a TD against Iowa in 1998. It was the fifth defensive touchdown the Buckeyes have scored this season.
Good Start – The Buckeyes are 4-0 to start the season for the fifth time in the last six seasons. In those four seasons, OSU ended the year with marks of 11-2 (1995), 11-1 (’96), 10-3 (’97) and 11-1 (’98). Last season, the Buckeyes started out 3-1 and finished 6-6. Big Win – OSU’s 44-6 win today is its largest margin of victory ever over Penn State. The previous high was a 38-7 victory in 1996. The 39-point loss was the biggest defeat of a Joe Paterno-coached team. The previous high losing margin was a 49-11 loss to UCLA in 1966 (38 points) and a 44-6 loss to Nebraska in 1983.
Freshman Score – Freshman running back Sam Maldonado scored the first touchdown of his career from 7 yards out with 53 seconds remaining in the game.
Penn State Game Notes
Penn State is 1-4 for the first time since 1964, two years before Joe Paterno became head coach. The ’64 team won its last five games to finish 6-4
Penn State is 0-4 at Ohio State since starting Big Ten play in 1993, the only conference foe the Lions have yet to beat on the road.
Including today’s win by Ohio State, the four teams that have beaten Penn State are a combined 12-0.
The highest ranked team has won the last 12 meetings in the series.
James Boyd made his third interception of the season and sixth in his career.
