New Ohio Stadium Record – Today’s attendance of 96,583 is an Ohio Stadium record. The old mark of 95,537 was set on Sept. 20, 1995 vs. Notre Dame.
Opening Day – The win today extended OSU’s streak of winning home openers to 22 games, dating back to 1979. Overall, the Buckeyes are 95-12-4 on opening day, since a 20-14 win over Ohio Wesleyan May 3, 1890.
Defensive Scoring – The four touchdowns by the OSU defense is an Ohio State record. The last two-touchdown game by the OSU defense was against Indiana Nov. 16, 1996 when Matt Finkes and Damon Moore each scored.
Doss in the Endzone– Strong safety Mike Doss’ first quarter fumble recovery for a touchdown was the first TD of his career. The score was the first by the OSU defense since Gerry Berry scored on a fumble recovery against Penn State on Oct. 16, 1999. Doss recorded his first career interception in the third quarter, picking off a David Carr pass in the endzone for his second TD.
Taking Two to the House – David Mitchell’s first quarter fumble recovery for a touchdown was the first TD of his career. He also returned an interception 51-yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Note: The last OSU defensive player to score two touchdowns in a game was Gary Berry Nov. 1, 1997 vs. Michigan State (Berry scored on an interception return and a blocked-punt return.)
First Touchdowns – Chad Cacchio’s 23-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was the first of his career. Matt Wilhelm’s 25-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was the first of his career and came on his first career interception. Scott McMullen passed for his first career touchdown and completion on a 44-yard pass on the final play of the afternoon, connecting with Ricky Bryant who also recorded his first career reception and TD.
First Career Starts – Today’s game marked the first career starts for Jonathan Wells, Darnell Sanders, Ivan Douglas and Matt Wilhelm.
Freshmen Debuts – The following freshmen made their Ohio State football debuts: Will Smith, Richard McNutt, Pat O’Neill, B.J.
