COLUMBUS, Ohio – Assistant Athletics Communications Director D. C. Koehl has been honored by USA Volleyball as this years’ recipient of the E. Douglas Boyden Media Recognition Award. The award is named in honor of E. Douglas Boyden, the 4th President of USVBA (1959-69). Koehl’s contribution has come in facilitating the growth of Big Ten volleyball
Koehl, in his 28th year at Ohio State, handles both the men and women’s volleyball in the Athletics Communications Office. During that time the Buckeyes hosted the NCAA men’s volleyball championship in 1978, 1983 and 1997. He acted as Tournament Manager for the first two championships.
He began working with the women’s volleyball program in 1988. That program has played in 11-consecutive NCAA Tournaments, reaching the national semifinals twice. During that time the program has produced 11 all-Americans and one national player of the year. Koehl’s 1992 and 1993 women’s volleyball guides were judged fifth in the nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Koehl has worked with the NCAA, the American Volleyball Coaches Association and various programmers to improve the statistical applications used in volleyball.
The Boyden Award was initiated in 1980 to recognize and thank media organizations and individuals who have supported volleyball on a continuous basis…and in doing so, have significantly contributed to its growth. In the ensuing 20 years USA Volleyball has honored men and women from all facets of the electronic and print media.
Koehl was honored at the Dorothy C. Boyce Annual Awards Banquet May 25.
