The Tip
Ohio State returns to its home base, Value City Arena, for its sole match-up of the season with the Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes are in need of a little home nurturing following a 75-52 loss at Purdue Thursday evening. The defeat to the No. 17 Boilermakers drops the Buckeyes to seventh place in the league standings at 4-6 and 11-9 on the year.
Over The Years
Ohio State touts its most successful series in Big Ten play against Michigan with a 32-4 record. The Buckeyes are undefeated against the Wolverines in Columbus (18-0) and are 14-4 in Ann Arbor. The two teams played in three overtime sessions in the `90s, including just last season, with Michigan coming out on top 85-71.
Welcome Wolverines
The Michigan Wolverines will be visiting Value City Arena for the very first time Sunday. In their last visit to Columbus on Feb. 22, 1998, the Wolverines became the last opponent to play in St. John Arena where the Buckeyes posted an 88-80 farewell victory. Michigan never claimed a win it its 18 previous visits to the Buckeyes’ former playing venue.
Head Coach Beth Burns
Marking her 11th career season, the third at Ohio State, Coach Beth Burns continues to guide the program to success both on and off the court. Last season, Burns guided the Scarlet & Gray contingent to a 17-12 campaign and to its first NCAA tournament in three years. In addition, a 9-7, fourth-place finish in the league marked Ohio State’s best effort since its 1993 Big Ten Championship run. Academically, six returnees earned OSU Scholar-Athletes laurels with two tabbing academic all-Big Ten honors. Burns took over the program in April 1997, leaving a successful, well-respected career at San Diego State where she was three times selected the WAC Coach of the Year (1994, `95, `97). She has earned a record of 43-33 (.566) as a Buckeye and is 194-114 (.630) for her career. Burns is 20-22 (.476) in her third season of Big Ten competition and 2-1 against Michigan. Burns Completes The Circle
With a 53-51 victory vs. Purdue Jan. 13, Coach Beth Burns has now recorded a victory against every Big Ten school. Burns Vs. On Ohio State
Freshman post-players LaToya Turner and Courtney Coleman paced the Buckeyes with 11 points apiece but their efforts fell way short as Purdue rolled to a 75-52 victory Thursday night in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Buckeyes challenged their opponent in the early minutes, countering Purdue’s 9-1 lead from the tip, with a 14-1 rally that led to their largest lead of the game, 15-10, at 12:24 mark.
Purdue scored back-to-back buckets to pull within a point and then had its junior forward Katie Douglas take over from there. Douglas scored 11 points in a 23-7 run that led to the first double-digit lead of the game, 32-22, with 4:13 left until halftime. The Boilermakers hung on to the advantage with a 37-28 lead at halftime.
In second half play Douglas didn’t quit, scoring 17-of-23 Purdue points to start the session.
Douglas led all players with 31 points. Forward Michelle Duhart collected a game-high 13 rebounds.
Guard Tomeka Brown was the third Buckeye in double figures with 10 points. Coleman also paced OSU on the boards with six rebounds.
Burns on Purdue
“All the credit goes to Purdue tonight. We (Ohio State) are very young and very lean, and we must play more in the full court than the half court. We don’t have the muscle yet to be able to play that kind of game.
“I think Purdue controlled the tempo and really took us out of what we wanted to do offensively. They were just a little too physical, a little too strong, for us to be able to get our normal shots off and I think that shook us up.
“We really got away from what we wanted to do offensively. It was a very good night for Purdue. I thought they dominated us in almost every facet.”
No Shying Away
Ohio State played its sixth game this season against a ranked opponent Thursday in No. 17 Purdue. The youthful Buckeyes are 1-5 overall in the effort.

Michigan Coach Sue Guevara
Michigan head coach Sue Guevara is in her fourth season overall and at the helm for the Wolverines. She was an assistant coach at Michigan State for 11 seasons before beginning her head coaching career at UM. She has a 67-39 school and career record, including a mark of 32-26 in the Big Ten. Guevara earned her M.S. in physical education at OSU.
On Michigan
The Wolverines are 15-6 overall and 7-3 in Big Ten play on the heels of a 70-59 victory over No. 21 Illinois Thursday night. The squad is led by senior captain Stacey Thomas, a 5-10 guard, who paces the team with 15.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game overall, and 17.7 points and 8.1 boards per contest in Big Ten action. She has recorded 78 steals this season and reigns as the Big Ten’s all-time steals leader with 348 for her career. Guard Alayne Ingram, a 5-7 sophomore, is also scoring in double figures (12.3 ppg) and is averaging better than 86 percent from the free throw line. LeeAnn Bies, a 6-3 freshman center, is second on the team in rebounding (5.9 rpg) overall, and in conference play (5.6 rpg). Sophomore Raina Goodlow, a 6-2 forward, is shooting over 53 percent from the floor with an average of 9.8 points per contest.
Last Year vs. Michigan
No. 19 Ohio State suffered its second straight loss of the season, falling short in an overtime loss at Michigan 85-71.
The Buckeyes played two lopsided halves of basketball, and ran out of steam in the extra session, to drop to fourth place in the league standings at 6-3.
In the second half, the Buckeyes played their patented defense-oriented brand of basketball, out-scoring the Wolverines 40-26 to knot the game at 66 at the end of regulation. OSU, missing its first three field goals in overtime, was beat 19-5 in the extra session.
Michigan took advantage of 13 (18 total) first-half turnovers by the Buckeyes to lead by as many as 16 and 40-26 at intermission.
Four Ohio State players reached double-figure scoring, led by forward Marrita Porter with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
For Michigan, guard Stacey Thomas scored a game-high 26 points. Teammate Alison Miller doubled-up with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
On The Up & Up
Freshman LaToya Turner’s effort on the boards has been nothing short of outstanding recently as the 6-4 center has been averaging an impressive 7.2 rebounds per game in the last five games. Overall this season, Turner is posting a team-leading 5.7 caroms per game.
Brown Raises The Bar
Sophomore guard Tomeka Brown etched her third game in double-figure scoring, recording 10 points against Purdue Thursday night. A little more than a week ago, Brown posted a career-high 19 points in a 64-50 upset of Michigan State (1-27). Last Sunday, she led OSU with 15 points in an 81-60 win against Indiana. She has averaged 14.7 points per game in the run against her season scoring average of 6.1 ppg.
Did You Know?
Two members of the Michigan coaching staff include stops as a Buckeye on their resumes. Head Coach Sue Guevara served as a graduate assistant at Ohio State during the 1984-85 season. Guevara’s assistant, Yvette Harris, was a Buckeye assistant coach for three years from 1990-93.
Buckeyes On The Mark
Ohio State bettered its Big Ten performance at the charity stripe in its second consecutive game, shooting 73.1 percent vs. the Boilermakers. The Buckeyes success eclipses its previous high of 70.8 percent shot a week ago vs. Indiana (1-30).
Steady Goes Coleman
Freshman forward Courtney Coleman co-led the Buckeyes in the scoring column at Purdue with 11 points, shooting 71.4 percent (5-of-7 FGs) from the floor. Coleman also led the Scarlet & Gray in rebounding for the second time this season with six caroms. With 12 points against the Hoosiers last week (1-30), Coleman currently touts a two-game scoring average of 11.5 ppg (5.2 ppg for the season).
A Tough Place To Play
The Buckeyes’ patented defense has held its last two opponents at home to an average 55.0 ppg and forced 56 turnovers. Michigan State, which scored a season-low 50 points Jan. 27, turned the ball over on 32 counts. Indiana, scoring 60 points, committed 24 turnovers, its third-highest total of the season. Ohio State’s scoring defense ranks second in the Big Ten at 59.5 points per game.
Lewis Continues The Climb
Despite undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery July 6, junior guard Jamie Lewis has continued her assault on the Ohio State career assists record book. Climbing from 13th place at the onset of the season, Lewis is just one assist shy of sole ownership of the fourth all-time career slot. She currently shares the post with alumna Cheryl Perozek.

Turner Marks New Path
Freshman center LaToya Turner posted a block at Purdue (2-3) to give her 22 for the year and the most-ever recorded by a freshman. Her total bettered that of Lisa Negri who had 21 as a frosh in 1993.
The 6-4 center is just one rejection shy of tying the most blocks recorded in four seasons (23 by Tiffany Glosson).

Non-Conference Wrap-Up
Ohio State matched its non-conference record of a year ago, recording a 7-3 effort. Of the Buckeyes’ seven victories, six were claimed by 30 points or more and by holding each of those opponents to no more than 50 points. The Buckeyes forced 5-of-10 teams to eclipse the 30-turnover plateau.
In an even more impressive run on the homefront in December, the Buckeyes went 4-1 in a five-game home stretch, while its scoring defense held opponents to a stifling 49.6 ppg., and forced an average 25.8 turnovers.
In the last game on the non-league schedule, Ohio State held the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks to a .204 (31-of-64) shooting percentage in the contest, just .004 percentage points shy of an OSU opponent record low. In 1981, OSU held Western Michigan to just .200 off 15-of-75 shooting.
Let `Em Play
Showcasing five freshmen in the 1999-2000 season apparently is no problem for head coach Beth Burns who has played each member of the Class of 2003 frequently and without hesitation. Three of the five newcomers have started at least once this season, playing in nearly a third of the overall minutes clocked. Center LaToya Turner and guard Tanya McClure lead the pack, averaging 22.0 and 16.7 minutes, respectively, in overall games.
Buckeye All-Star
For Lauren Shenk, the summer of 1999 was anything but typical. The 5-10 sophomore guard enjoyed the fruits of a four-game exhibition tour in Belgium and Germany as a member of the Big Ten All-Star Team. The unit posted a 3-1 record with Shenk pacing the scoring effort with an 11.0 scoring clip. The long-range shooting talent tied the Buckeye freshman record for three-pointers last season, draining 43 on the year. Shenk ranked third in the league in shooting proficiency with a clip of .382 and sank a trey in 23-of-28 games, including a Value City Arena record 5-of-7 performance vs. Illinois Jan. 8.
Scholar-Athletes
Six returning members of the Buckeye Basketball team attained scholar-athlete laurels last season. Senior Michaela Moua, juniors Courtney Bale and Mandy Stanhope, and sophomores Tomeka Brown, Laura Ingham and Lauren Shenk all earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors, maintaining GPAs of 3.0 and higher. Moua and Stanhope also tabbed Academic all-Big Ten recognition.
We’re No. 2
In just two seasons, Coach Beth Burns’ talent as a top-notch recruiter has resulted in her securing the No. 2-ranked freshman class in the country. The all-Ohio class consist of two nationally-ranked players in 6-4 center LaToya Turner (Pickerington High School) and 5-4 point guard Tanya McClure (Gahanna-Lincoln) who were hailed at No. 2 and No. 7, respectively at their positions. Forward DiDi Reynolds, 6-1, reigns as the Division IV Player of the Year out of Hopewell-Loudon. Also joining the frontcourt are Ohio Capital Conference standout D’wan Shackleford, 6-0, and Courtney Coleman, 6-2, of Cincinnati Hughes who ranked sixth in the state last year, collecting 15.9 caroms per game.
Buckeye Class of 2000
Head Coach Beth Burns has again secured members of the nation’s top high school talent in assembling her 1999 fall recruiting class, signing Ohioans Caity Matter, a 5-10 guard, and 6-3 forward Emily Haynam.
Matter, a First Team all-Ohio selection and the Division III Player of the Year, enters her senior campaign with a 26.0 ppg scoring average. Ranked No. 18 nationally by the All-Star Girls Report (ASGR), Matter is a pure shooter who owns every offensive record of the Pirates’.
Haynam averaged 12.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game as a junior, and led the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC), collecting 9.8 rebounds per game for the Wildcats. Ranked No. 91 by ASGR, she is a first team all-OCC selection and earned honorable mention all-District laurels.
