OSU Women’s Hockey Drops Series Finale To St. Cloud State, 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to visiting St. Cloud State, 4-1, Saturday night at the OSU Ice Arena. Along with the series sweep, the Huskies took four conference points from the Buckeyes, who stand at 6-9-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the WCHA. SCSU improves to 8-8-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the WCHA.
The first period saw very few shots on net from both teams as most of the action took place in the neutral zone. Kobi Kawamoto put the Huskies on the board first at 17:59 with her ninth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Rachel Denner went on a breakaway and extended St. Cloud’s lead to two with the gamewinner at 19:54.
OSU successfully killed off three-consecutive penalties in the second stanza, including a 5-on-3 at 8:07. At 19:58 in the second, Kawamoto struck again with an even-strength goal from Ricki-Lee Doyle and Abby Cooper to put the Huskies ahead, 3-0.
At 9:05 in the third, Lindsey Steblen (So., Clayton, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Central) fired a shot from just in front of the blue line for OSU’s lone goal of the game. Corinne Rosen (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) and Melissa Pirie (So., Islington, Ontario/Etobicoke Collegiate) were credited with the assists. Doyle sealed the Husky victory at 12:52 with a shot to the upper right corner of the OSU net.
For the second-consecutive game, OSU held SCSU to single-digit shots in every period and outshot the Huskies, 37-15.
Ohio State also held St. Cloud, which has the top-power play percentage in the WCHA, to one goal on six opportunites. The Buckeyes were unable to convert on six opportunities.
April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary’s) recorded 11 saves. SCSU’s Laura Gieselman stopped 36 Buckeye shots.
Following a two-week holiday break from action, Ohio State will travel to New York for three-consecutive road games. The Buckeyes face St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. Dec. 30, Cornell at 2 p.m. Dec. 31 and the U.S. National Team at 11 a.m. Jan. 2 in Lake Placid. OSU returns home Jan. 12-13, 2000 to battle Bemidji State.
