Women’s Hockey Loses Tough One To St. Cloud State, 4-3, In OT – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Despite seeing an early two-goal lead disintegrate in the second period, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fought back and took visiting St. Cloud State into overtime Friday night at the OSU Ice Arena. The Huskies scored with seven seconds remaining and skated away with a 4-3 victory. Following the conference loss, the Buckeyes slip to 6-8-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the WCHA, while the Huskies improve to 7-8-1overall and 3-5-1 in the WCHA.
Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) turned in a two-goal performance for the Buckeyes and both were on the power play. Frost’s second goal, at 19:18 in the third period, tied the game at three, sending it into overtime. Heather Farrell (Fr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret) assisted on both of Frost’s goals.
Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview) started the scoring at 16:42 in the first stanza with a power-play goal, her sixth of the season. Chapple fired a shot on net and Lindsey Ogren (So., North Oaks, Minn./Moundsview) collected the rebound for an assist. Katie Frohreich (So., Baudette, Minn./Lake of the Woods) was credited with the second assist.
At 4:27 in the second, Frost scored OSU’s second power-play goal of the evening to put the Buckeyes ahead, 2-0. Emily Hudak (So., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) and Farrell earned assists. The Huskies were unable to convert on two-consecutive power-play opportunities in the second period before Jennifer Swanson put SCSU on the board at 15:12. The goal was Swanson’s first of the season from Fiona McLeod. Just 15 seconds later, Roxanne Stang fired the puck to the upper right corner of the OSU net and tied the game at two going into the second intermission. Four minutes into the third stanza, Rachel Denner put the Huskies ahead, 3-2, with a power-play goal from Kobi Kawamoto and McLeod. SCSU’s Leanne Perrin was whistled for holding at 17:44 to give the Buckeyes’ a 5-on-4 advantage, until OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary’s) left the ice at 18:12. With 42 seconds remaining and a 6-on-4 advantage, Frost was able to slip her second power-play goal of the night past Husky goalie Laura Gieselman to send the game into overtime. The goal was Frost’s ninth of the season.
With only seven seconds remaining in the five-minute sudden-victory overtime period, Denner struck again for the Huskies with the game-winning goal from McLeod.
OSU held SCSU to single-digit shots in every period and outshot the Huskies, 31-19.
Ohio State also held St. Cloud, which has the top-power play percentage in the WCHA, to one goal on seven opportunites. The Buckeyes went three-for-five, or 60.0%, with the advantage.
Stojak played 63:46 and recorded 15 saves in the losing effort. SCSU’s Gieselman stopped 28 Buckeye shots.
Ohio State returns to action Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against St. Cloud State in the series finale at the OSU Ice Arena. The game Saturday is the last time the Buckeyes will hit the ice at home until they take on Bemidji State Jan. 12, 2001.
