Women’s Hockey Falls To The Cornell Big Red, 5-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$ ITHACA, N.Y.-The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team lost to Cornell, 5-3, in a New Year’s Eve matchup at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y. Following the non-conference loss, the Buckeyes fall to 6-11-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the WCHA. The Big Red stand at 5-6-1 on the season and 3-6-1 in the ECAC. Freshman Erin O’Grady (Fr., London, Ontario/Culver Academy) scored the first goal of her college career and Lindsey Ogren (So., North Oaks, Minn./Moundsview) added her first of the season.%^$
%^$ Cornell left wing Erica Olson hit hard and fast for the Big Red, knocking in her third and fourth goals of the season in the first three minutes of play. Olson slipped the puck past OSU’s April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) for an unassisted goal just 25 seconds into the first period. At 3:25, Olson struck again, this time from Lindsay Murao and Brooke Bestwick to give the Big Red a quick 2-0 lead. Ogren put the Buckeyes on the board at 7:26 with her first of the season. Corinne Rosen (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) skated the puck past the blue line on a breakaway and took a shot, which deflected off CU goalie Sanya Sandahl. Ogren was ready for the rebound and fired the puck to the upper right corner of the net.%^$
%^$ At 9:22 in the second stanza, Sarah Olivier scored her second of the season from Olson and Bestwick. The Big Red took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission when Olson capped off her hat trick at 11:23 and would finish the night with four points.%^$
%^$ Cornell earned a two-man advantage early in the third period when Katie Frohreich (So., Baudette, Minn./Lake of the Woods) was whistled for cross-checking and Melissa Pirie (So., Islington, Ontario/Etobicoke Collegiate) received a five-minute major for hitting from behind and was ejected. Murao scored a power-play goal at 9:06 and put the Big Red ahead, 5-1. Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck St. Mary’s) jumpstarted the Buckeye offense with her fourth of the season, a 4-on-4 goal, from Rosen at 13:43. Halcisak then assisted on teammate O’Grady’s first collegiate goal at 17:14, but it was too little too late for the Buckeyes.%^$
%^$ OSU converted on one-of-four power-play opportunites and held the Big Red to two goals on six power-play opportunites.%^$
%^$ The Buckeyes outshot CU, 31-26, and Stojak recorded 21 saves. CU’s Sandhal played 33:06 and stopped 10 Buckeye shots and Elizabeth Connelly played the remaining 27:54 and tallied 18 saves.%^$
%^$ Ohio State returns to the ice Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Lake Placid, N.Y. where they will battle the U.S. Women’s National Team in an exhibition contest at 11 a.m. The Buckeyes’ next home series is Jan. 12-13 against the Bemidji State Beavers at the OSU Ice Arena.%^$
