COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team dropped the series opener to Minnesota-Duluth, 7-1, Friday night at the OSU Ice Arena, losing by the largest margin so far this season. The Buckeyes slip to 5-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the WCHA, while the Bulldogs improve to 9-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the WCHA. Senior captain Corinne Rosen (Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) earned an assist on the Buckeyes’ lone goal, the 100th point of her collegiate career. The former Providence College standout has played in 116 games, collected 50 goals and registered 50 assists for 100 points. Carrie Gill (So., Rochester, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) netted the first goal of her career as a Buckeye, OSU’s lone goal in the game.
UMD hit hard and fast. Hanne Sikio scored her 10th of the season 52 seconds in from Joanne Eustace and Satu Kiipeli. Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs extended their lead to two. Maria Rooth slipped the puck past OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary’s) at 2:18 in the first stanza.
UMD would score four more unanswered goals in the second stanza. Brittny Ralph, Sikio and Erika Holst put the puck in the net for the Bulldogs at 2:15, 4:09 and 17:53, respectively. Sikio earned a hat trick when she netted her third and UMD’s sixth goal of the game at 18:57. At 19:41, Gill collected a pass from Sarah Van Riper (So., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Rosen for OSU’s only tally.
OSU was unable to convert on eight power-play opportunites and held UMD scoreless through seven Buckeye penalties.
The Buckeyes managed only single-digit shots in all three periods and were outshot for only the second time this season, 38-18. Stojak played 55:02 and recorded 27 saves for the loss. Ann Fridrick (Jr., Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) saw action in her first collegiate game. Fridrick played 4:58 and made four saves for an .800 save percentage. NU’s Tuula Puputti stopped 17 Buckeye shots.
Ohio State returns to action Saturday night in the series finale. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs square off at 7:05 p.m. at the OSU Ice Arena.
