With the Win
The No. 16 Ohio State Buckeyes improve to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten.
Combs has Career Afternoon
Derek Combs rushed for a career-high 153 yards this afternoon. The total marked the third time in his career he has topped 100-yards rushing in a game. Combs’ other career 100-yard rushing efforts also came this year. He ran for 142 yards in the win over Miami (Ohio) and for 122 in the victory at Wisconsin.
Ohio Stadium Record
The attendance today, 98,406, is an Ohio Stadium record. The old record was 98,144 set against Penn State earlier this season.
Johnson the Sack Man
Senior defensive end Brent Johnson recorded three sacks on the afternoon. The total ties Johnson for the second most in a single game in OSU history. The Ohio State record of four sacks was set by Jason Simmons against Washington State in 1991.
Ott Returns
Junior linebacker Jason Ott made his 2000 season debut. Ott missed the first eight games of the season after he tore a muscle in his right shoulder Aug. 15.
Doss Scores Again
For the second time the season, sophomore strong safety Mike Doss found the end zone for the Buckeyes. In the second quarter, Doss picked up a fumble caused by a Brent Johnson sack and returned it 73 yards for the touchdown. In the season opener against Fresno State, Doss recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. He is the second defender to record two touchdowns this season. Cornerback David Mitchell scored twice in the Fresno State contest.
Six for the Defense
The Doss score also marked the sixth defensive touchdown of the season for Ohio State.
Stultz Adds to Record
Dan Stultz’s two field goals give him 53 for his career. He broke the old OSU record of 50 last week against Purdue.
Career High for Cacchio
Senior flanker Chad Cacchio set a personal career mark with five receptions. His previous career best was three against Penn State earlier this year.
First Pick for Cooper
Senior linebacker Joe Cooper recorded his first interception of this season and the second of his career in the second quarter.
Seven More
The OSU defense increased its total sacks this season to 44, just three short of the program record of 47 set in 1998, with seven sacks on the day. Brent Johnson led with three, while defensive end Rodney Bailey recorded two. Doss, freshman defensive end Will Smith and freshman nose guard Tim Anderson each recorded one sack.
